A: Usability issues for first-time Stack Exchange users - a micro-study

JaydlesGood job! This is awesome. There's a lot of useful observations here, but here are a few I'd highlight specifically: The default copy in the hero is kinda goofy. It has that, "No charge - EVER. Enter your credit card below!" vibe. This actually got fixed on SO: Normally, weird copy getting up...

user315433
If they are going to update the "weird copy in the hero", the number 4.7 million needs an update too.

user315433
And it'd be a lot less impressive on some other sites.

> CS TCS 00:12 shrug
I lol'd

user315433
TCS is pretty much "shrug" itself. The least active of graduated sites.

user315433
I wonder how @ArtOfCode managed to get 20 people to participate in this thing. It looks like the kind of study I'd expect to happen around the SEHQ.

> Arts and Crafts is a community of 347 arts and crafters, just like you, helping each other. Join them, it only takes a minute.

user315433
And together we will rule Arts...

Maybe xkcd.com/591 is relevant.

Civil wars ensue between the Artsers and the Crafters, the fight is brutal, paint and glitter adorn the battlefield
@hichris123 still factually inaccurate
how can you be anonymous if you have to signin

user315433
To be fair, it's more difficult to correctly place a question that is not your question.

> You can try this change when it's built by becoming a beta tester.
Nice, beta testing the iOS app

1:40 AM
The good thing about "open by default" philosophy at @StackOverflow: people go and do things like @stack_overkill http://www.stackoverkill.com

... how does that have to do with "open by default"?

user315433
Nothing, really.

> First of all I downloaded StackOverflow's public dataset (updated every 3-4 months), which is in XML format, and I transformed it into AVRO format (much more Big Data friendly) using a script of my own called SOXTA, which uses LXML and AVRO libraries.
Seems like this could've been done with just the API... but hey still a cool project.

On another weird job position on SO... stackoverflow.com/jobs/112975/…

1:50 AM
@hichris123 that sounds like a lot of API calls

user202362
646 extra kilometres on the car hire, I thought it's $0.25 per km. The lady at the car hire desk confirmed it. But when I look at the credit card bill, it's 0.25 plus 24% premium location surcharge, plus 3.5% admin fee, on top of all that, 10% GST

@Telkitty So you're broke and turning to a life of crime?

user202362
So I realised how Australian government has been very protective of it's own people by extort heaps from foreigners because most of the people at Uluru speak languages other than English ...

user315433
@bjb568 Not worried about PII in channel name?

2:13 AM
If you bother to look it up, you've limited yourself to a small and probably harmless group.
Not including googlebot, which is the main concern.
As long as you can't find yourself by googling your name, you're probably at least much better than most people.
@JamesENL Well, I'm a cat.

@Telkitty I think a simpler explanation is that car hire places are bastards. But yes, if you look at the language map of Australia, most places that aren't a city on the coast don't speak English as a primary language

user202362
Most people on the coast speak English, I would know because I have been to many of those smaller towns on the coast ... and most of those places inland speaks English as their primary language too ... unless you are talking about Aboriginals

exactly

user202362
Most of the tourist I bumped into at Uluru speak either German, French, Japanese, Chinese or even Russian.

user202362
2:20 AM
I am sure there are people from many other places too ...

I think we managed to get all the Australian users on stack exchange into one chat room at once
@bjb568 that's a shame, I really liked those novels

:p

user315433
I guess I can release this now - the next languages for #stackoverflow are British and Australian, in that order.

Joseph C. Gayetty (b. 1827? Massachusetts - d.__ ) was an American inventor credited with the invention of commercial toilet paper. It was the first and remained only one of the few commercial toilet papers from 1857 to 1890 remaining in common use until the invention of splinter-free toilet paper in 1935 by the Northern Tissue Company. == Biography == United States Census records from 1860 show Gayetty lived in New York City with his family; his birthplace in the census records is listed as Massachusetts. He first marketed toilet paper on December 8, 1857. Each sheet of pure Manila hemp paper...

@Quill We are very strict in what and where we moderate. We only do SO main, not meta, not other SE sites and certainly not chat. Without a clear and agreed set of rules there is no use in applying authority without having enforcing powers. Group dynamics are not enough to control that, within SOCVR I have my hands full to keep that under control. Thanks for the heads up.

You disappoint me @rene. You don't need rules to apply authority. You just barge in and go ...

@ShadowWizard YOUR WIZARDRY IS INVALID

@ShadowWizard only alicorns have both horns and wings, and most alicorns are princesses.
Which makes a sense, if you consider that the whole name "princess" doesn't refer to a nobility title
Actually, it would have made more sense if it was kept as "Guardian"

No

I use 4chan for /hm/ but its very very very NSFW
I found /r9k/ fairly interesting

@JamesENL lol, I never really tried it that way, but did notice articles like the above and others where people complained it's too much, think even about hosting illegal contents.
@JamesENL this?

Yes, it's an active board based of the XCKD robot

doesn't sound NSFW

No, /hm/ is very NSFW, /r9k/ is usually ok

oh, /hm/ is a real channel??? LOL

Yes

Though it's like "I use 4chan for.... hmm... you know...."

I use 4chan to help topple world governments

Ideally, I wish I could fetch the number of edits per post on each SE sites and compare them to each other.

1. the wheel of blame is broken;
2. I'm struggling with certain questions where I want to ask "what is the best way to handle X" where X is on-topic for the site and can be handled in multiple equally valid ways, but "the best way" would be closed for being opinion based
In effect, I'm looking for the best wording for that kind of question that still asks "how should I do X", but avoids the common "opinion based" or "too broad" close reasons.

11:06 AM
@Nzall you could pick one way and then state that the solution doesn't meet a certain criteria. You can then ask if there is a way to fix that where an answer could be one of the other equally valid ways

@rene That's fine if you already know a solution, but Worldbuilding is often used without a predefined solution in mind. it's often "Here's a situation, how could this happen" or "here's a situation, what's the results". Related for ELU: "I'm looking for a word that means X"

@Nzall I would personally close the whole WB site as POB . You can still use my suggestion where you state your specific criteria. Because that is the difference between what is the best and what is suitable given this context/boundary/criteria. That is more useful because future visitors can relate to that criteria

@rene It's POB, but it's not POB in the sense that software recommendation is POB

I know and that is why I'm happy and confident on SO but not so much on other sites.

@Nzall what version exactly? There are many by now. The original works fine.

I've recently visited a profile of user and can't see Network Profile link. How is it possible?

@Pandya hidden communities
If the site is hidden, it won't show the link to network profile.

@ShadowWizard OK
Is there any way to see SE Network profile in such case?

@Pandya shouldn't be. It means the user prefers to not be linked.
(so even if there is a way, I won't share it.)

ok.

Unless it's a spammer of course, in which case I believe moderators do see the link.
(i.e. just alert a mod)
I'm getting old.... totally forgot I posted a bug report, was going to post it again now. Got screenshot ready with FHRC and all, and just for fun searched if this was already reported. self slap

12:32 PM
Btw, I am discussing this because whenever I would like to communicate to user (for discussion on one of his post), sometimes I use chat-room and If he is not in chat-room I sometimes want to invite him. In order for this I use chat.stackexchange.com/users and try to find him. After finding him, I verify he (user that I want to discuss) with the help of network profile..........

user202362
has robert downey jr gained weight? he didn't have round face in iron man

@Pandya well, just invite him via a comment then, and delete the comment after he responds. (or after a while anyway)

user202362

@ShadowWizard just post it so I can dupe vote against your own question

12:44 PM
Whenever new user is registered on one of the SE site, user profile is created giving sequential number e.g site.stackexchange.com/users/1234. Similarly network profile is also created e.g stackexchange.com/users/4321 Right? Now, list of users (for a site) can be available for search by site.stackexchange.com/users but for SE (Network) profile stackexchange.com/users is not available. Instead we've to use stackexchange.com/leagues for particular site.

@rene lol, that would be cheating! :D
@Pandya that is true. The network profile is created with the first site, then of course the same ID sticks.
The leagues will show only users with 200+ reputation, so for most users are not relevant.

accountid is in SEDE if you're interested

@ShadowWizard any Idea about why is stackexchange.com/users not provided?

@Pandya probably not really needed. SE isn't social network.
You should be looking for content, not people.

Good point :SE isn't social network!
By the way I've found one way is to search user on area51.stackexchange.com/users where network profile is provided!!
How about ^^^ ? @ShadowWizard

1:03 PM
@Pandya well, it requires the user you search for to have account on Area 51, it's not created automatically. Plus, the details there never synchronize with the other sites, e.g. old display name will stick there forever.

@Telkitty chat is a Third place:
In community building, the third place (or third space) is the social surroundings separate from the two usual social environments of home ("first place") and the workplace ("second place"). Examples of third places would be environments such as cafes, clubs or parks. In his influential book The Great Good Place, Ray Oldenburg (1989, 1991) argues that third places are important for civil society, democracy, civic engagement, and establishing feelings of a sense of place. Robert Putnam addressed issues related to third place in Bowling Alone: America's Declining Social Capital (1995, 2000). 2...
