Q: HTTPS protocol does not carry over when visiting metas or chat

onebreeQuestion When navigating throughout SE, can't the protocol be carried over, based on the previous page visited? I know in Rails (which SE is not written in), you can link to sites as //example.com, which will use the protocol from the originating page. I wonder if the same can be done for SE. ...

I thought the site metas didn't support https yet?

Dunno, they should support and un-support at the same time.
Hey, breaking news. I tried to make sense but suddenly felt too bored to do so this time.

i hate when that happens.
I'm in the middle of a very profound and insightful comment when I suddenly lose interest and go elephant.

From what I can tell, a <a> with a href starting with //host.com will use the same protocol. So if you're on https://meta.stackexchange.com, a link to //chat.meta.stackexchange.com will link to https chat. See this imageUniqueke kittean ate Unidoggy 3 mins ago

@Shog9 not rewarding people for putting endless amounts of replicated content on the site. I'm not referring to all dupes, dupe targets with 20 question closed against them. Is that not a reasonable number of duplicates?

@MsYvette it's arbitrary
as far as that goes, there are far more answers to duplicates of less common questions
and far more upvotes on those answers

user310756
@Shog9 focusing on the mass duplicates, can't we figure out a way to discourage it.

@MsYvette There's another problem too... consider this, one of the most commonly-linked dup-targets on SO, with hundreds of questions pointing to it.
It was asked two years after this question, now closed as a duplicate of it.

user310756
@Shog9 the way around that is a time limit

user310756
of being closed as a dupe

9:23 PM
I don't really think Iain, the author of the top answer there, was plotting in '09 to garner ill-deserved rep by answering that question.
@MsYvette so we add another arbitrary rule to shore up the problems with our first one

user310756
was there even 20 duplicates of the original at that time

user310756
well

in '09? NO. THE ORIGINAL DIDN'T EXIST UNTIL 2011

user310756
there's this

user310756
well exactly

user310756
9:24 PM
I am not saying people are plotting

user310756
I am saying they are questions that are easy to answer, off the bat

user310756
and with a google search the answer can be found

@Shog9 Set n = 1 and expand it to all close reasons. Closed questions are not useful, and answers to them contribute to the demise of the site. We should not incentivize answering questions that will get closed in any way.

So you're setting out to punish folks who you feel the system is rewarding for bad behavior now, and you inadvertently disincentivize closing duplicates because now folks lose rep.
Unintended consequences are a real pain

@Shog9 Reward closing duplicates with rep then.

user310756
9:25 PM
yes I understand that

Editing gets rep.

user310756
@bjb568 an idea

@bjb568 please stop writing. Spend 20 seconds thinking through the implications of what you're proposing, then write about it.

user310756
the same people who answer will close

You have shitloads of data on what folks do when they can grind their way to some bigger number with no consequences for getting it wrong. Use it.

user310756
9:26 PM
there is quite a bit of discussion about FGITW and people answering crappy questions

I'm going to implement an even harsher version for DevDoodle. Bad questions aren't left around to cause broken window and rep isn't awarded for them. Bad questions will be deleted. And they should be here too.

@Shog9 What do you think about this proposal?
7
Q: Reward <3k reputation users for finding duplicates

Andre SilvaI suggest rewarding a silver badge to users with <3k reputation for correctly finding and flagging duplicate questions. The community would benefit having most part of its users engaged to keep the site clean and organized. Why only users with <3k rep? Because they are majority and because u...

Funny enough, if you delete a bad question then any reputation earned from the answers goes away too.

user310756
Or, the threshold for deleting dupes on a dupe target with > x duplicates closed against it is different

user310756
exactly

9:28 PM
So this is why I wanna go back to the actual problem we're solving here

user310756
but roomba doesn't run on dupes

user310756
yes

user310756
maybe implement roomba on dupes

user310756
with x parameters

We're talking ~300K answers here.
For the 20-linked-duplicate scenario

user310756
9:29 PM
and can we reduce the delete -> upvote ratio on dupes of large targets

user310756
I'm not meaning go through and take away rep that exists now

user310756
I'm meaning implement it moving forward

about 2 million including all answers to duplicates

@Shog9 Yes, the problem of signal to noise ratio caused by a rep system that rewards FGITW on bad questions. The problem that trumps all other problems because of its scale. Millions of posts.

user310756
we need a system to at least curb it

user310756
9:30 PM
I'm not anti dupe

I don't think disincentivizing closing is going to be anywhere as bad as the current problem.

@bjb568 you earn 10K on SO yet?

We need to delete more and post less.

no.

@Shog9 now this I can get behind

9:31 PM
Go do something, please. Stop proposing poorly thought out solutions to problems you don't even encounter because you aren't even using the damn system.

user310756
we need to incentivise people to take time to write good answers

@Shog9 No, I don't use SO anymore since it's full of crap, and I don't think it's a reasonable use of my time now to hunt down easy questions, not check for dups, and answer quickly for a few upvotes.

@bjb568 then leave.

user310756
@Shog9 who are you talking to?

the cat I just kicked.

user310756
9:31 PM
ah k

Anyway...

user310756
I love SO, or I wouldn't bother.. and I strive to implement things that will automatically assist in raising the bar

@MsYvette punishment is a poor motivator. Let's start with that. You don't get people to write better answers in the time they're donating for free by punishing them arbitrarily.

user310756
that's not a bad thing, but it is if I can't get it right

user310756
@Shog9 yes

9:33 PM
… My attempts to create value via GR questions were controversial, at best. The dichotomy of immediate value to specific users vs lasting value to a more general audience (i.e. search engine users) is problematic. We need to balance these.

the easier you make it for people to be rewarded for doing the wrong thing, the more you will have the issue

user310756
what do you suggest? or is it not a porblem

Finding duplicates can be incredibly frustrating. Even if you do it every day, even if you think you have the body of questions in your preferred topic memorized, it can still be time-consuming and error-prone.
And that's in cases where it's clear-cut

user310756
hm

@Shog9 Altho I agree in general, removing incentive for answering bad questions just creates a lack of incentive, it doesn't create a disincentive.

9:34 PM
There are questions that appear to be duplicates and aren't, and cases that look unique but are really just old questions in new dressing.

user310756
yes

One sec, lemme put together a little chart

user310756
ok

you don't wanna johnny september dupe flagging every post because it uses a certain keyword.

the one I used as an example was a stock standard dupe

> Silly questions being answered in seconds and it attracts both questioners and answerers. It doesn't matter it was answered 1000 times already or being obviously too localized - there are always a fresh volunteer eager to share their vast knowledge. Some questions got closed, yeah. At the rate of 1 to 100 happily answered ones.
> At the very same time good programming questions being closed on sight or driven away only because it require more knowledge than usual participant has or it takes more than 30 seconds to write an answer. Or - a greatest sin! - it require some efforts to get into
- YCS
My fear is that SO is failing for both aspects of the dichotomy.

user310756
well after I posted that meta on that dupe @bjb568 the dupe and answers got more votes (at first- until I mentioned that)

user310756
Which supports (albeit one example) your theory, of the lowest common denominator

… because in the end, you can't provide immediate value to specific users if your site is covered in crap and nobody wants to answer questions. The only way to satisfy both constraints is to optimize for the pearls. To aggressively delete the crap and keep the site clean.

user310756
@Shog9 nice query thanks

Answers posted to duplicate questions, by month

user310756
can I add that to my meta question?

Introducing gold-badge closing had a pretty significant effect

user310756
yes I can see it's help steadily for a while

user310756
9:40 PM
Should we introduce a silver badge counts as two dupe close votes?

user310756
That would cause it to drop

the idea of gold badges being able to do it is that they not only have skill in the area, but have enough site experience to know dupes

Sam
@Shog9 Which apparently didn't last (for all but 1 year?).

A silver badge may not

I think the only way to change the upward trend of the graph in the long term (since you can't just keep increasing dup closing privileges) is to raise the bar for joining the site.

> raise the bar for joining the site
nice b8

Q: I CAN HAZ TEH ANSAR?

user5910758Please write my code for me. I need it tomorrow.

Took 30s to create an account and post this.

@MsYvette now, here's another graph for you: data.stackexchange.com/stackoverflow/query/edit/434956#graph

@bjb568 You got caught by Smokey...

That's the time it took to close duplicates (looking only at those closed within 12 hours) by month

Do we want to change the behavior of the OP, the users that answer or the users that view the question but don't flag/vote?

9:45 PM

@hichris123 So? That still doesn't change much.

user310756
@Shog9 thanks

So now, to answer your question...
@MsYvette the problem we need to solve here is: how can we identify duplicates in larger quantities and close them fast enough to forestall answers.

user310756
@Shog9 yes excellent problem statement, better than mine

My solution is to decrease the number of questions being asked.

user310756
9:49 PM
It can't be a blanket problem solver, it will discourage good questions

This is what we've been working on for the past two years. Making it easier to close questions as duplicates, making it faster to close questions in general by heavily prioritizing recent questions in review.

user310756
yes

The big fat hairy problem that remains though is that identifying duplicates is still hard.

@Shog9 do you guys do code block comparison analysis specifically, or just overall comparison analysis

Doesn't help that there's a bit of a serious bug with the close dialog.

9:50 PM
@Shog9 does the triage algorithm detect the possibility of the question being a dupe?

@Quill simple keyword search

user310756
well, there could be a special mimic bot that has runs of keywords.. it would take special care to put the keyowrds into groups

user310756
who like Smokey then comes into the appropriate chat rooms

There's a lot of potential here for experimentation, if someone's interested

Sam
@Shog9 But closing only deters "new FGITWers", thanks to this.

user310756
9:51 PM
Yes!! me me me

The nice thing about this problem is that (unlike, for example, OT questions), a huge number of duplicates are still hanging around in the public data

user310756
You know how we're having the new Tag people

user310756
like the Teams

Complete with a handy table for links and so on

user310756
yes

9:52 PM
If I could write Levenstein distance in SQL, maybe

@Sam have you tried that recently?

Sam
@Shog9 Personally, no. But I have witnessed it just the other day.

@MsYvette It's a price we can pay. Especially if it allows more good answers.

I mean, you can probably still do it, but... It's rather strongly discouraged
The whole point was pretty much to not throw away someone's work if they were on a shitty connection, and that still applies.

user310756
Yes and if the question is really bad it will be deleted naturally

user310756
9:54 PM
It's like link only answers on a closed down voted off topic question, they don't need to be flagged for deletion, roomba will take care of that

Sam
Sure, but if I can still post my answer and get rep, why should I bother closing as dupe?

user310756
@Shog9 you know how there are going to be 'tag' groups

user310756
that was offered with the 'teams'

user310756
in the recent new things coming thingo

user310756
will this affect closing dupes?

user310756
9:57 PM
oh no, we've lost him

@MsYvette not sure what you're referring to

user310756
@Shog9 I'll have to find a link hang on

Sam
@Shog9 Just a side note: it's not evidently obvious (from the posts I've seen) that this is indeed "strongly discouraged".

user310756
what do you think of having a dupe or mimic bot (we could call it Mimi) to enter relevant chat rooms on certain groups of keywords. We could try with maybe 4 dupe targets to see how it goes

@Sam try it
