You've turned your avatar into ammonia now?

8:28 AM
It's something way more exotic than that.
It's trihydrogen cation, the simplest triatomic molecule in the universe.
And its bonding is super-weird, that's why you don't recognize it

I was wondering why the N was missing.
....and... it really is a molecule? It's stable?

@S.L.Barth In the space.
i.e. at -271.6 degrees celsius.
Whoops.

I see, under exceptional circumstances. Or at least, exceptional from an Earth-based point of view.

The bond present is a three-centered bond. Normal bonds are two-centered. That's why it's really unstable.
(And the two-centered bond in H2, hydrogen gas, is relatively strong)

And the fact that one electron is missing plays a role in this three-sided bond, I assume.

8:42 AM
Yes.
Actually, there's also triatomic hydrogen but that's even more unstable.

I actually have a copy of "Chemistry: the Central Science" over here. I looked in the index, it doesn't mention trihydrogen (neither the molecule nor the ion) there, but there is an entry for "triple bond".

Triple bond is way different.
Can you find "3c-2e" bond there?
Triple bond is actually 2c-6e. It's the strongest known bond.
For example, the bond in CO is the strongest covalent bond known.

Don't see it in the index. But it's a paper copy.

IIRC it was 1216 KJ/mol.
@S.L.Barth Can you see a discussion on the bonds present in diborane?
Diborane is the easiest example of a 3c-2e bond.

Diboranes, p859

8:55 AM
I've seen it in many textbooks. Trihydrogen cation isn't mentioned anywhere though.

And since "Chemistry: the Central Science" is a textbook aimed at first year students....
But it has a picture of diborane on page 860.

Well, yes.
In some chemistry contests it's mentioned.
Bonding in trihydrogen and its cation is more complex, is studied at post-doc research levels and is concerning interstellar chemistry. I wouldn't expect to see it in any book aimed at students.

I imagine that you could still write a nice popular-scientific article about it.

Well yeah. But they think B2H6 is enough for a mentioning.
Sometimes students go all O.O OMGZ WUT DA HEL IZ DIS? HYDROGEN HAZ 2 BONDZ?

That's where you find out who the promising students are.
