I have been having fun this evening setting up automated backups to my new NAS from all my devices. I am a nerd.

@jadarnel27 I need an automated backup system. I have backups... but they're all manual & done ~2 months ago. What program are you using?

@hichris123 That's the problem I was running into! All my backups were stale. And I would often get confused about what was backed up where, resulting in duplicated backups.

I'm using a "My Cloud" NAS device from Western Digital. The continuous backup software is called "WD Smartware."

@hichris123 You might be able to get the WD Smartware software for free, then. I think many of their devices come with a free license. When I installed the software, it automatically detected my device and granted me the license.

@jadarnel27 Yeah, I think I have it. I just never set it up since it's an external hard drive, so I can't really do automatic backups (it's not always plugged in, and not always on the same machine).

@hichris123 Ah, right. Yeah, that's why I splurged to upgrade to the NAS. Now I just have to be on my WiFi network, and my PC gets backed up automatically.

The cross-platform integration is cool as well. My wife's Macbook sees the NAS as a Time Machine backup target.

I kinda wish Windows Backup was closer to Time Machine.
