Q: Long sites break the layout on the front page

3venticThe long name pushes the stats to a weird place. And what's with the "Stack Exchange" at the end anyway?

upvotes

is it just me that the review queues are not loading on SO?

The reaction to this question is an example of what sort of questions are expected here. People expect FAQs to be asked.
This question has been asked by a new user that includes the code (more than needed, though), stack trace, and people jumping all over with downvotes and close votes.
A question that would have required adding a space in scanf() format would have attracted half a dozen answers and a couple of upvotes.

ok, it is back.

God I love Backblaze. Saved once again.

Did you break your computer, @Bart?

Nope. Forgot my files at home.

Oh haha.

Always great fun to discover what you fixed late at night was not committed when you get to the office.
But Backblaze picked it up for backup already

I drove all the way to the office without my laptop once. That was...frustrating.

10:29 AM
Oh yeah, hell.

It was a 20 minute drive, too.

I once figured out the solution to a problem after a whole day of performing an installation in Milan that wouldn't work. Minor detail ... I figured it out 5 minutes after boarding the train back to Geneva ...

Awww, that is lame.

@Bart Then you spent the whole trip itching to try it out, I assume.

10:32 AM
Oh no, I had it figured out on my notebook. Great thing is, I knew I had to sit through the 3.5 hour train ride back, only to make that same trip again the very next morning.

@Bart Holy crap. How often do you have to make that trip?

@jadarnel27 I make two such trips weekly. On a bus.

Couple of times a month usually. They are great days. Leave at 7h30 in the morning. Arrive somewhere around 12. Meeting until 5pm. Back to the train station. Home around 10pm. Lovely ....

@SecondRikudo Wow! I would dislike that much commuting. Especially on a bus.

10:35 AM
Still, by train it's not too bad. At least I can get some stuff done on the rides back and forth.

@jadarnel27 I dislike that much commuting :P Not much choice though.

It takes me less than 10 minutes to get to my parking lot.
@Bart Yeah, that seems like it would make it a lot more manageable (being on a train).

@Bart Yeah, with trains you usually have power outlets, no such thing on a bus :P

Yep @SecondRikudo. That's ideal. And as long as I'm still in Switzerland, I even have mobile internet. So that's not too bad

@Bart In Israel we have WiFi on the bus, but no outlets.
Train has both, so it's good, but there's no train to where I'm travelling, only bus :(

Localization!
> This question does not appear to be about Stack Overflow em Português ou a plataforma da rede Stack Exchange, within the scope defined in the central de ajuda.

The next one that reports a localization bug...

11:39 AM
@rene ...gets hit with a giant Ş?
5
Also, I see that Stack Overflow em Português now has a different favicon to Stack Overflow proper.

@michaelb958 yep...

What is that supposed to be? A lawn?
Is the grass truly greener at Stack Overflow em Português?

localised site => location => ground
I'm guessing

@rene not sure he is correct, didn't find any proof though.

I'll let the post sit there until a dev clarifies that...

11:44 AM
@Bart not greener, probably friendlier. :)

What "*ç)/&%ç% of a "%ç&?}$ says we are not fr*ç(&king friendly @ShadowWizard?

12:00 PM
I understand why SEDE blanks the user id in the votes table, but I'd like to perform some computations on my votes. Is there a way to do that at all? I thought maybe that records with my user id would not have the user id field blanked when I perform a query from my account but this does not seem to be the case.

I wonder if you can use the public API for that. I haven't looked at it in forever.

Afaik the core data available in SEDE has all such private information removed. So it's not just that you don't see it for others @Louis.

I guess I'll have to investigate the public API then...

1:00 PM
facepalm
I hate it when people delete their duplicate questions immediately after the first "possible duplicate" comment appears.

Or when they do so after the first (still unupvoted) answer with a comment "thanks, that works".

"Cleanse" .... what a horrible word

1:17 PM
@Bart why "horrible"?

I don't know. It's one of those words I just really don't like.

I don't like it either. Most of the time when I hear it it has connotation of "cleaning but with some sort of magical hocus pocus component to it".

Yeah, I guess that's my issue with it as well

Maybe I should just embrace it. "That algorithm will clean the database, sure, but my algorithm will cleanse it!"

If I ever see a commit message use the word "cleanse" .... I'll treat it with suspicion

1:24 PM
Edit the message to cleanse it of that word!

1:34 PM
Oh man why do I always get the bad ones
No, I can't provide full code. I fixed what I believe was wrong based on your vague question. It is not that hard to replace the few lines in your code with my code. Ask a new question instead but remember we are not here to do your work. — rene 43 secs ago

:1999369, sorry, was afk. We used to meet daily (on google hangouts), largely because a lot of the issues were one-offs, and we wanted to absorb best practices. We've cut it to three (still a lot) but each has a focused review (site milestones&transitions, feature requests, and major project updates/milestones).

2:04 PM
@ShadowWizard ^^

@rene voted as such

I did leave a comment to prevent crap towards SR...

how is SR going, by the way?

Don't forget the death, by the way. Just had to add that. For no real reason.

@JanDvorak Rejected two seconds after you rejected it.

Dangit, too late to join the party. Edit clash it seems.

I'm genuinely surprised by the lack of robo-approvers

Ask about it on MSO @JanDvorak

@Bart Nope, just reject-reject-reject.

@JanDvorak Rejected by the Tavern Effect.

nice, thanks.

Isn't it evil to reverse the hard earned reputation by means of suggested edits?

?

It turns out that this guy hadn't made tag wiki edits for a couple of days. I got curious and commented on one of this edited posts.

2:34 PM
@Andrew'saUnitato Thank you for your valuable input. We'll take it into consideration and will contact you if necessary.

@devnull best case scenario: review bans actually work

And this was the reply :)
@devnull: why to stop the good work? because the reputation points I earn by editing the wikis are removed after one hour or so... It already happened in the past (two or three times). And now I have the confirmation. Since this isn't fair... it's not worth the effort. — Bob Malooga 8 mins ago
@JanDvorak Ah! so is it a review ban?

mod-applied, it seems
and he even admits he's been doing it for the repz. Lovely.

But that shouldn't have interfered with the rep, should it?
Or perhaps only if the tags got nuked completely?

Yup, conclusive evidence that it was for rep.

No, the changes are still there. Just the rep gained has been reversed. See this, for example.

@BobMalooga if you've been doing it for the reputation... you've been doing it wrong. — Jan Dvorak 9 secs ago

Ah, that didn't onebox

deleted by owner 36 seconds ago

Because it was deleted.

2:38 PM
Hah
I'm tempted to direct him to your Meta post @devnull

@JanDvorak Please don't add the link to the meta post on that question.

Ah, hehe

No, no. Please. Given that I was fooling around earlier today:
@BobMalooga No tag wiki updates in a while? — devnull 4 hours ago

@devnull which link, which meta post, which question?

Q: Mass updating of tag wikis with content copied

devnullA certain user has been making edits to tag wikis all over. Not surprising enough, the suggested changes: are copied 1 verbatim 2 from 3 wikipedia 4 with or without attribution, and do not follow tag wiki guidelines Robo reviewers continue to oblige by approving the suggestions. (... had 5...

2:44 PM
@devnull: Well, it's frustrating to see your rep grow and then drain... after all, I put some effort in editing the wikis. — Bob Malooga 1 min ago
Yes, a lot of effort. Too much of copy/paste!

I still don't get the whole reputation scenario though.

@BobMalooga I'm sorry, but copy/pasting content from wikipedia doesn't count as effort. — Jan Dvorak 9 secs ago

I'm not too sure either. But it seems that until you hit 10K, you do get rep for suggesting edits on tag wikis. @Bart

I've definitely got rep after hitting 10k

Sure. But losing it doesn't make sense to me.

2:47 PM
@devnull **20K (trusted user)

Maybe because I'd flagged it for moderator attention.
Thanks, @michaelb958

Still, moderators can't interfere with rep. And if the tags are still there...

Probably an exceptional exception.
Don't know, can only guess: maybe they wanted to determine if it was only for rep?

Nah, they won't get that involved.

I did notice that the user gained rep today by editing those wikis. And it seems to have disappeared now :) So something is going on.
I even edited that meta post today: UPDATE: Ran into this suggested edit. The editing spree has started again!
(with hyperlinks to the suggested edit, reputation, suggested edits history)

2:52 PM
It's a shame he deleted his meta post. Would have loved to know the answer.

Vote to undelete? @Bart

I can't
After the freaking split I'm <10k on MSO

I have. How many votes are needed? Probably @JanDvorak can.

@Bart Go answer some regex questions...

Might be better to ask that question again if you're interested @devnull

2:55 PM
Open

The Meta question's back...?

Which question?

Ah, yep

My question is still unanswered: meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/250613/…

So soon! I can't believe that. @michaelb958

Who does sales here?

Q: Dead sponsored links

MeNoTalkThe google-maps tag page shows two sponsored link, both are dead.

First the rep was reversed. Now the question is undeleted. Now he'll be even more puzzled.

Hah @rene, I might just try that. Just 300 to go for 10k. But by answering only Unity questions that doesn't go fast.

Or maybe answer some Python questions. @Bart

jQuery questions are great for fast rep too :p

Even duplicates in python world are upvoted like crazy: stackoverflow.com/questions/23286254/…
It received it's share of downvotes after a comment from me in another post:
The world is unfair. Certain duplicates, no effort questions are upvoted like crazy, and certain ones are downvoted! — devnull 6 hours ago

Would it be evil to undelete and downvote the same post

Not at all!
It's already undeleted though: meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/252171/…
Let the downvotes begin! 3 - 2 - 1 - START
I thought I had to edit every possible tag - Including marking the wrong or misspelled ones as such. — Bob Malooga 1 min ago

Downvoted, then. thanks!

@Bart Could you please ask if he would continue the good work or abandon it?

Sure, I'll link him to your question for reference.

3:10 PM
@Bart Suuure... I know what that means!

No, please.
I would have been ok with it except for this:
@BobMalooga No tag wiki updates in a while? — devnull 4 hours ago

@Andrew'saUnitato Rest assured that your input is valuable to us. Our trained staff will take care of your message and when necessary will contact you for a follow up. We wish you a pleasant weekend.
@devnull Just kidding. But let's put things in perspective a bit. As horrible as we think some of the edits are, it's a user spending time because he thinks he's helping. The rep is a bonus, sure, but he probably edits with the best intentions and gets confirmation time after time that he's doing just fine. I mean, everything gets accepted, right?

Rep is the motivation. And he probably knows that the reviewers are robos.

@devnull there is nothing bad about expecting a bit of rep, and getting somewhat upset when you believe it's arbitrarily taken away
The point is, he doesn't just think he's helping, he knows he is. Because everybody keeps telling him so by approving and providing him with glorious points.

But if you happen to look at some of the edits, then it'd be evident how horrible much of those are.

Evident to ....

3:22 PM
Yes, right. So does that imply that it's the reviewers that need to be blamed?

Partially blamed, yes. Majorly educated.
And of course the user doesn't go completely without blame for some of the suggestions, particularly when not properly attributed, but hey, the community is going "good boy, have a treat".
Why does Anna's avatar always make me think "What? What did I do wrong this time?" ...

@Bart because, deep down, you know you did

I know @Braiam .... I know ....

Should I post my review dropdown script thingy to stackapps?

4:32 PM
Aww, too late
I can't believe I was the only person to reject that.

@Louis What should I flag it with?

@TheGuywithTheHat opinion based.
That it was a typo is evident in the self-answer.

Q: Review dropdown menu

3venticAbout This userscript/extension replaces the review button with a dropdown that lists all the review queues on the current site and the number of available posts to review. Well at least my sister didn't get at my computer while it was on the SR flag queue tab :P

@3ventic If you put that as a .user.js file on gthub, then link to the "raw" file, it'll automatically install on Grease/Tampermonkey
@Undo lol

We will doing a more intensive read-only test like we did yesterday a little after 1pm EST today (approx 10-20min from now)
@TheGuywithTheHat Like this?

@Undo Your sister does a really good impression of a cat on a keyboard.

@3ventic Yeah!

@Louis Yup.
The dog has trained her well

@3ventic IMO, GitHub sends headers to prevent these files from being executed

it opened in tampermonkey for me

@Braiam Not for me. Insta-download and then Chrome complained.

I meant from inside background/content pages
@Undo @3ventic @TheGuywithTheHat ^

But it's not hotlinking for execution, it's hotlinking to the source.
Extensions can still treat the file as they please

You need an employee, or is it something we might be able to help you with @GlenH7?

@Bart Thanks, I need someone with site-wide nuke powers. Programmers has a new user with a fairly offensive avatar.

Is merging of questions only possible by mods?

@Bart on it

user194162
I like using deleted comments that way. Thanks for nuking it Anna

user194162
@rene yes, merging questions is a mod-only activity

user194162
6:16 PM
And in this particular case, the question they asked isn't that bad. Their avatar on the other hand is inappropriate.

@GlenH7 Is that difficult/takes it a lot of effort/fun to do ?

user194162
@rene I think it's more of a challenge when there's lots of answers in both questions to merge. Or at least that's the only time I have heard of the mods complain about it.

user194162
@AnnaLear - thanks for clearing that one out.

OK, tnx

A: Tag request for research software

BartTags are not created in a void. Tags are created by adding them to questions that need those tags. And ideally this should not be just a single question. We have some very diligent members in our community who will clean up tags that don't seem to add value. So the process would be the following:...

Sound reasonable? Anything I'm missing?

6:48 PM
are they commercial?

Nah, academic it seems

How did I strike-through in posts again?

<del>like this </del>

<s> works
didn't try the others

I think they are all supported.

@Bart There is already an nlp tag and one for stanford-nlp. Isn't this a related discussion?

We've had discussions like that in the past. There's the [project-euler] tag for example. Consensus doesn't seem to be entirely black or white on those. Meta-ish, yes. Nukeable, meh.

Q: I rejected "codechef" tag addition suggested edit, but what about those coding competition tags?

MarijnI recently rejected a suggested edit to Count the subsequences of length 4 divisible by 9. The edit suggested to add codechef. I didn't know what Codechef was, but it appears to be an online programming competition where you can win money and "goodies". I rejected the edit, I thought it would be ...

Let's just say that I don't have a clear answer for them.

7:10 PM
I left one final comment and if that comes out OK'I'm fine with your answer, if that matters ;-)
Maybe they should try to post one and tag with the nlp tag to see how it goes?

@rene your approval is all that matters to me.

:)

7:25 PM
@Bart not mine :(

I don't see any approval from you @Braiam. Nor any cake. What message do you think that sends?

that the cake was a lie all along :(

If the cake is a lie .... I can eat as much of it as I like ..... /me is getting cake

@jadarnel27 Hooray!

What job?

11:45 PM
That was a looooong interview. 9am-2:30pm.

There's an echo!

There's an echo!

@Louis @TheGuy just a job I had a phone interview for the other day. I had a face to face today, and they presented me with an offer at the end.
It's at a small software development / technology consulting firm.

That's great.
Ah, ok software development.

... software development.

11:47 PM
That's what I was wondering about. Could have been a job herding cats for all I know.

... all I know

I hear cat herders get long interviews too.

@Louis Ah, right. Can't assume everyone on the network is a developer these days =)

I see the echo is still with us.
Well, in a more serious vein (than cat herding), it could have been academia.

I'm ridiculously excited about it. The job, not the echo. Though the echo is cool.
@Louis Truth. I'd like to go that direction some day.
But after I've worked "in the field" for a while.
I've only been doing this since '09. And .NET web development since...whenever I started posting answers on SO.
