Not specifically. I was just wondering if somebody could help explain how to migration works to the moderator for edX CS1691x:

Anonymous
meta.edx-cs169-1x: how can I move posts from meta to the normal forum? (darn, no oneboxing for the pseudo-private-beta site)

Anonymous
Or explain that migration isn't enabled yet for the site, if that's the case because of its beta status.

I don't think meta->main migration is enabled anywhere
the edx sites are a strange beast though; I 'll leave this to Geoff, he's been handling it.

Anonymous
5:58 AM
Oh, I didn't realize that wasn't supported.

then again he's a mod, and mods can migrate anywhere

@JeremyBanks Meta-> main isn't enabled anywhere (at least AU and UL doesn't)

Anonymous
@Braiam Okay, thanks. I guess was misled by my experience on MSO.

It used to be, but we took it away - there's generally nothing worth migrating and in the rare instance where there is, mods can do it.

@rene later on, when (if) the split is reversed, a rain of downvotes, NAA flags and confused comments will ensue.

really? I thought links were preserved, for evar?

I linked to the MSE dupe in the comments, OP asks me to post it as an answer. I do so and the system converts it to a comment for being trivial...

Hmmm, how about copying the content in a 'comment block' in the answer and add a link for the attribution?

10:10 AM
@rene Martijn just said that it's fine to copy MSE FAQs to MSO. Lunch break now :)

@Bart That one is fantastic.

oh, wow, when did that happen?
Oh, I see it's the same logo but in chat it looks weird

1:14 PM
Are they suggesting Meta is more a less a void? Nothing but a faint outline @ShadowWizard?

@Bart yeah, transparent to be technically accurate ;)
Is it worth a bug report?

Can't we consider it a feature?

Looks better on the blue background.

@Bart I don't think they planned this, it's just using the same logo as the parent site

Kinda like it though

1:19 PM
@GnomeSlice sure, most images with transparency relies on being over some background. :)

Seems the SO Tavern is not really getting any traction

2:10 PM
Hi!
If someone asks "can someone do X for me", in this case convert a file to a different format, and includes a link in the question to the data to convert, is it appropriate to edit out that link?
The question in general is not awful, and without that part deserves an answer
but I don't imagine we actually want to allow people asking for services, effectively?

Mobile device, @Shadow. Android phone in my case. And I'm specifically referring to code formatting in chat (I don't think I mentioned that).

@Joe I'd argue that the question is the problem here, not the data.

Agree with @Bart, the question is off topic in Stack Overflow as he's asking for personal support. No point to remove the link, better just flag/close and move on.

@Joe How is that question not awful? The OP presents unfamiliarity with R as part of the problem. Are answers supposed to present a treatise on R to answer it?

Joe
Eh, the question isn't well worded either
but

2:15 PM
@Louis the OP expects an answer which will simply give him the complete converted file.

Joe
"I have an .rdata file but I am a SAS/SPSS user, what can I do to import it"?
is a reasonable qeustion
question

@ShadowWizard Of course. :)

That's not really the body of the question though. Make it that, add in what you've done so far which demonstrates this struggle, and you might have something that's a good fit for the site @Joe.
"You" of course being the OP in this case

Joe
That's what I was going to do for him (well, half of it anyway).

A link to the data is then only a bonus.

Joe
2:18 PM
Thanks!
I figure a link to the data in that case is entirely irrelevant - the fact that it's an .Rdata file is sufficient

I just casted the last vote needed on that question..

Joe
I really want to know who cast the +1 for that question.
Even someone seeking Electorate should be thinking -1 not +1 ...

I just checked but I didn't mis-click...

@Joe upvote troll? ;)

Wow, big problem with tag links on MSE.

2:34 PM
Myeah, to be expected for a while I guess

@LanceRoberts what problem?

They will eventually, once they are all fixed, point to MSE, but there are many questions that are not SO-specific, but use an SO tag as an example or reference. They will now appropriately be on the MSE site, but have broken tag-links.
Here's a related feature-request:
1
Q: Expand magic tag-links so all sites can be specified

Lance RobertsApparently after the split, all the tag-links (once they are fixed) will point to MSE instead of SO. It seems like many questions will want to reference tags on a particular site. We already had the special magic tag link of [meta-tag:], so how about a syntax to direct tag-links to the site of ...

Pff, spamming your own request in chat so you can get more of that precious precious Meta rep. Tsk tsk. :p

Wow, @Bart, that's cynical.

Even with the smiley?
Man, I must be cynical to the bone then.

2:37 PM
@LanceRoberts that's like saying "Wow, sun, you're hot" :-D

@ShadowWizard It wasn't this winter.
Someone broke the sun then :(

@Andy you mean when hell froze?

@ShadowWizard Many times over, I believe.

Funny/weird comments here

I'M NOT FAT!
Wait, you didn't say that .... never mind

@Bart of course not, you're more of the NTFS type.

@ShadowWizard We are so close to a Godwin. Come on! We can do it

Well, at least one thing will be fixed:
the fact that they are pointing to SO in preview is still a bug though, fix incoming — m0sa ♦ 1 min ago

You know, any product name starting with "New" is bad. If there will be new NTFS version, it will be called NNTFS? NNNTFS?

2:58 PM
@ShadowWizard At least he got a peer pressure badge out of it.

yeah, saw he got really offensive towards the end. Oh well!

@LanceRoberts FWIW you realize I was just kidding, right? Wouldn't want another user to leave because of a chat comment.

@Bart, got that, no problems here.

@Bart it'll take much more than that to make Mr. Roberts leave, believe me. :D

Haha, true that.

3:08 PM
I blame Andrew for that.

Q: Side-by-side diffs are not side-by-side

ughoavgfhwThis only seems to be an issue here on Meta. When in the side-by-side edit view, the two versions appear above each other instead of beside. The issue does not seem to depend on the browser width, and does not occur for side-by-side markdown.

Dammit

@ShadowWizard oh, the memories
@JoshuaDwire I believe it wasn't officially launched by edX.

@Oded Should I be able to access it though?

@JoshuaDwire not officially, I suppose. But are you really interested in participating there? Given its scope?

@JoshuaDwire it's an unlaunched private beta - any user accounts created will be destroyed at the official launch date

@Oded Honestly, I don't know anything about the site except that it's "For students of HarvardX CS50x: Introduction to Computer Science", which I'm not.

5:08 PM
I bet it's pretty lonely in there :)

@GeoffDalgas Just for a full disclosure, I got in by adding a cs50user cookie and then logging in. I just wanted to make sure the ability to do that wouldn't cause problems later.

You 1337 hacker you

nah - we honestly don't care that much

What do you guys think about this answer? The first answer on this thread answers the question and this was meant to be just additional information. But some people think it's useless and have downvoted it.

hi, hmm, how can I get more information about why my reputation was dropped by about 80 without any notice in the history?

5:15 PM
SO? MSE?

oh, I did not have the removed posts checked.

TADAAA!

why was this question deleted?

:)

5:16 PM
@AmalMurali Good answer, not a thing wrong with it.

both are completely valid Qt questions!
"A moderator has deleted this post and it cannot be undeleted"
I see that the user got removed....
he got suspensions before, etc.

roomba'd

but why are the good questions deleted?
I cannot even start an undeletion....

Flag it for undeletion

SIGH

5:17 PM
Yep

roomba is this stupid?

it had -1 score. If the answer was self-deleted, the question would go with it.

Both have negative scores. How is that "good"?

maybe votes from the answerer don't count?

@Louis We'll they are not deletable bad

5:19 PM
@Bart: The first comment was "kojio's answer was sufficient" (which was later deleted by a mod), but I'm not sure about the downvotes...

I rather think this user was deleted
for fraud stuff

@Bart Fair enough, but what you are saying there is more precise than labeling them "good".

and his questions correspondingly.

@AmalMurali You have enough upvotes on it. I'd ignore the downvotes unless someone comes forward with a valid reason.

anyways, I don't think it was a great loss.

5:20 PM
btw, I got some + reps as well by this user deletion.... so he must have had some downvotes on my answers :)

@GeoffDalgas How about dev.stackoverflow.com? Do you care if I can view it (but not participate in it)?

roomba is weirdo

@LaszloPapp It's there to make us all look sane. :p

@Bart: What do you think about the comments under the answer? Do you think they should be deleted as well? (Especially as the first comment no longer exists)

@Bart: ?
why would roomba delete it with positively scored answers?

5:22 PM
Flag for cleanup @AmalMurali. Something along the lines of "The original comment no longer exists. All subsequent comments are therefore obsolete. Perhaps they could be deleted".

or even with negative votes, but without closure?

@JoshuaDwire no, it's not super secret either - not much we do here is.. we just try and keep people from accidentally stumbling in our private sites (usually drunk)

@LaszloPapp Don't know the exact details. I'll see if I can dig up some details.
And note that I'm not 10k, so I don't have full visibility
grr

This Meta post has details.

well, I have got to go
another thing is that a serial downvote was not detected by the system
got 3 within a minute for relatively long posts, at the end of my answer queue with score ordering.

5:24 PM
Seems to me these questions should not have been deleted, because they had answers.

I thought 3 would be caught?

I have had them go undetected @LaszloPapp. It's no guarantee apparently

right, report time to the team then
I do not see any bump (e.g. through edits) trick either, but even then it would be suspicious all within a minute.
yeah, I just cannot get my head around to roomba deleting a question with answers having e.g. 5 upvotes.
without a closed question, etc.

then it was swept with user deletion, most likely.

the other thing is: how did I lose my rep when it happened on the fourth of January?
I thought you do not lose rep after 60 days?
the other was asked on the 9th of January.
is there any more condition for that than that?
also, I lost 25 rep when it was only having one upvote
probably it was selected and got deselected in the same step? Again, why?

5:33 PM
The post would have to have a score of at least +3 in addition to the 60 days afaik

that rule is probably not fair....

@Bart answer, or question?

think about +50/-48 for instance
one would lose 400 rep.

@LaszloPapp you don't deserve rep for answers that have +50/-48

@JanDvorak Let me look it up, but I think the rule is "post". So both.

5:34 PM
@JanDvorak: says who? The system will currently provide 400 rep for you.

@Bart both, or either?

well, 404, to be precise.

404: reputation not found

Ah, I think it only looks at your contribution @JanDvorak.

yeah, I thought someone would make that joke :)

5:35 PM
So if it's to a +gazillion question, your answer is not by definition saved
Shog9 on March 05, 2012

If you’ve been around Meta Stack Overflow the past few days, you’ve seen a fair bit of conversation sparked by the recent changes to how reputation is calculated:

To be clear: reputation values are not changing, every action in the system is still worth the same amount. Here’s what will be different:

Your reputation will be correct at all times

Deletions will have a much more immediate effect on reputation, not waiting on a recalc (but reputation sync takes up to 5 minutes on a delete/undelete action; as to not block the user’s response thread, it’s offloaded to a background queue) …

@Bart that would make sense, thanks.

anyway, this should be restored
the question is: can mods restore selected states, too?

From that blog: "First, if you’ve contributed something worthwhile to the site, you should keep the reputation for that even if it eventually gets deleted. “Worthwhile” here is defined as, A score of 3 or greater, Visible on the site for at least 60 days"

Laszlo's answer was just +1

Accepted answer? That shouldn't be lost @LaszloPapp

5:37 PM
I lost 25 rep, @Bart, and I only seem to have one upvote on one of the answers.

accepts don't do much. They merely pin the post to the top.

but I do not see it selected anymore.
@JanDvorak: that and 15 rep.

Hmm, I'm somewhat fuzzy on that @LaszloPapp.

and an indicator to some people that the problem is solved when browsing the list for unsolved questions.

s/15 rep/ 1.5 upvote/

5:38 PM
well, I think it is worth bringing this up on meta.
if there is no thread for "all of a sudden deleted" stuff.
I assume it is because the user got deleted, but ...

What is still an open question @LaszloPapp?

whether selected answers get unselected automatically

side thought: should I rename myself to gmail.com and set up a bot to reply to any notifications?

I am trying to look for an example, but it is kind of difficult.
Community is a moderator, too, apparently :)

@LaszloPapp yeah... that's a known issue. "It's rare enough, though, to be handleable by flagging as Other"

5:42 PM
@JanDvorak Ah, that's clever!

@JanDvorak: pardon?
