12:30 AM
I'm actually surprised at how touch friendly the non-mobile view of the Stack Exchange sites are

12:54 AM
@RebeccaChernoff , wow -- shouldn't have complained last night about 4 invalid flags. I have 20 today. Oh well. Done with that.

@MTibbits meh, learn from it.

1 hour later…
2:01 AM
O_o
WTF?
The profile drop-down says -24, even. Huh.
Ah, right, questions up votes on StackApps are worth ten reputation each. Still odd, apparently someone severely changed their mind about the userscripts. :P

5 hours later…
7:26 AM
Oh maaaaan!
I was finally going to book my London DevDays tickets today, only to find out they were sold out yesterday!
Damn.
I hope they have a waiting list or re-activate the ordering process if somebody else cancels.

@EatmoreTwisters Or, you can fly to Sydney instead. Just saying :P

@YiJiang hahaha! That's an idea too. :)
But it would exceed my time and money constraints.
Maybe I could sweet-talk Marc in hacking into the booking system and doing a max_bookings++;?
2
I could bring bribes.
Cuckoo clocks from the black forest.
German sausage.
Lederhosen.

7:46 AM
Maybe.
Hey, @EatmoreTwisters, this is so odd. I was planning on going somewhere yesterday at around 6, but I crashed at about 5 and just woke up.
It's like 3:45AM here.

7:59 AM
@Moshe Take my word for it, try not to eff-up your sleep schedule.
Being sleepless in Seattle isn't as romantic as they made it out to be in the movie.
5

8:13 AM
Maybe rules are different in NY? After all, it's the city that never sleeps.
Anyway, I find the best way back to a normal sleeping schedule is mercilessly staying awake during the day, and not to take any naps
And not to go to sleep too early, but to stay awake until normal sleeping time...
I imagine that NY can be an interesting place to walk through at 3:45 AM, though!
Ah, he's gone. Maybe he found his way back to sleep :)

@EatmoreTwisters That's where I got my start on the poor sleeping habits. Well, that's where they got going in earnest.

8:28 AM
@GeorgeMarian yeah, I can imagine!

It was certainly fun. I can say that much.

Yeah, I'm sure it's a hell of a city.
Not a place to live for me though, at least not long term... Too much city

Yeah. I don't know quite where I stand on that. I certainly love it. There is an energy that I have never felt anywhere else. Even just passing through the airport.

@GeorgeMarian yeah. Definitely worth experiencing, I'm sure of that.

However, it can be stressful and I tend to be a giant a-hole while there. That said, I do get things done. heh

8:33 AM
:)

@EatmoreTwisters Still lurking

@Moshe Technically, if you go away and return, it's not lurking.

@GeorgeMarian Ah, well technically, ... can't think of anything

Working on a project that's due in (less than) two weeks.
I kind of just crashed earlier, had some plans, and well...

8:38 AM
Yeah, I know how that is.
Meanwhile, today I tried to crash early as I was feeling tired and yawning quite a bit. I managed to rest for about an hour.

That usually happens win I try to nap, I was hoping for the same. Didn't work. Slept for hours.
Heh, having trouble reading the NSUndoManager docs right now, mostly because of the word "undo". Too funny to be reading at this hour, keep seeing un-doe.
@EatmoreTwisters - I may have found someone to study German with in College, not so sure how serious this guy is, but we were discussing it yesterday.

Can someone close this feature request (of mine) as it's now "obsolete"
8
Q: Can Flagged Comments please appear on the "Flag Summary" Screen?

tombull89As per the question title. Comment Flags are not longer affecting flag weight, so this request is now useless.

@tombull89 Is it status-completed?

no, status-obsolete.

ok, just curious

8:49 AM
Flag weight doesn't get increased by comment flags any more.

> Linux can be an 800 pound guerrilla that you have to learn to tame yourself or it can be a monkey in a cage that you play with once in a while. So are you an animal tamer or do you just need to go to the petting zoo every so often.
2

9:01 AM
@GeorgeMarian Where's that from?

@Moshe A comment in a thread in the LinkedIn Linux Users group.

Heh, nice.

Someone had asked for suggestions on a distro, since they needed LAMP experience. What I don't understand is why they started on WAMP in the first place.

9:16 AM
the only thing worse than no documentation is wrong documentation...

The Theory of Interstellar Trade is a paper written in 1978 by economist Paul Krugman. The paper was first published in March 2010 in the journal Economic Inquiry. He described the paper as something he wrote to cheer himself up when he was an oppressed assistant professor, caught up in the academic rat race. Krugman analyzed the question of "how should interest rates on goods in transit be computed when the goods travel at close to the speed of light? This is a problem because the time taken in transit will appear less to an observer traveling with the goods than to a stationary obse...
> while the subject of this paper is silly, the analysis actually does make sense. This paper, then, is a serious analysis of a ridiculous subject, which is of course the opposite of what is usual in economics

9:48 AM
is it worth editing old questions on main that are poorly asked but have good answers?

@awoodland Sure.

@EatmoreTwisters I'm not involved with the conference stuff, except as attendee etc.

@MarcGravell Who is involved?

Marc yeah, I was mainly joking. I fired an E-Mail to Alison, maybe there's a waiting list of some sort.
@Moshe cool!

@EatmoreTwisters Yea, finally, some real motivation. Also, what do you think of Rosetta Stone software for learning German?

10:02 AM
I should have never "taught" our cat how to get me to open the door...

@Moshe you mean the original one? It's pretty gray and heavy
:)

quick question - the questions on facebook.stackoverflow.com - are they imported from elsewhere?

You mean the software?
@Sathya no
It's merely a filtered view on SO's question base
@Moshe you mean the software? I don't know it, so I can't say really
It looks nice though.

So, I can ask a question w/ a facebook tag on so.com & it'll get reflected on facebook.so?

@Sathya unless I have misunderstood everything completely, yes, that's exactly the way it works

10:05 AM
@EatmoreTwisters hMm time to test that.

@Sathya yeah.
Gotta run for lunch, later!

@Sathya I gather if its tagged with "facebook" it gets reflected on fb.so.

@EatmoreTwisters indeed. Thanks.
ya'll can flag this :p

@Sathya but it does have a fb-related flag..

@tombull89 try to edit it in facebook.so.com & you'll go nuts
ok, nuts is an exaggeration
but you do encounter:

10:08 AM
heh

one tag not related? eeh.

@tombull89 yeah

What's the deal with these mini sites? What is the purpose? How does one suggest one?

I thinks it's only because the FB dev forums are being closed completely.
the SE sites are a better format.

10:32 AM
Hey what the...? I have flagged question as "not welcome in our community" and it got flagged as offensive :( I'll lost a lot of flag weight if someone declines it.

Q: Testing asking a facebook question without a non-facebook tag

SJTI'm testing asking a facebook question without a non-facebook tag. Hence this question may or may not get posted. If it does get posted, please do flag for deletion. Apologies for inconvenience caused.

@genesisφ you've voted to close? You should VtC and follow it up with Mod flag.

yes
I did so. I marked it "not welcome in our community" and flag description changed to offensive

you didn't read? :|

I did. But I didn't have idea it will change to just "offensive"
Fortunatelly, there's option to flag it twice! So second one is "not welcome in our community" filled in "other"
Hey I'm still looking for Chrome extension which can make gifs from browser. Does anybody know about some?
heh

oh bah

10:40 AM
do not worry, I'll build it up

used to work, wonder what happened
flies to the sandbox
@genesisφ ask away

nice

Q: Looking for Chrome extension which can make gifs (animated) from browser

genesisI want a good extension which would be able to capture screen (selected area) and then join these captured images into animated gif. Is there one?

11:00 AM
Just filed a few bug reports with the big fruit company that has more cash than the US government.

What the... this script returns only headers, without body but when I direct to that url I''m posting to, it's redirecting? sandbox.phpcode.eu/g/d63df

11:21 AM
@Sathya when should I mark flag as invalid in case of vandalism?

@genesisφ when there's no vandalism? as in the post is not destroyed / not edited with random crap

when they're deleted, I think it's always vandalism. 4+ posts delete in a short time

@genesisφ then no, you shouldn't.

And can you give me an example of case when "vandalism" flag is invalid?

12:04 PM
@genesisφ I can't, tbh. Perhaps the rare case were OP wants to delete is negatively-scored answers or negatively-scored, zero answer questions

Q: How to install Android on HP TouchPad?

JeffI want to install Android on my HP TouchPad. What steps should I take?

This question (not surprisingly) has gotten 4k views in the past few days. Might be a good idea to delete it to stop wasting people's time looking at it
I've just been told in a SMS to 'go on9'. I think it would be appropriate to point out to the sender that this silly abbreviation has a more vulgar meaning

Voted to delete

12:53 PM
Voted to delete - out of petty envy because I didn't catch a €99 Touchpad. If I can't have one, nobody should be able to install Android on it! There.
Next stop - revenge censoring of all SE Network resources talking about the subject.

@EatmoreTwisters They were selling it at the HP booth of an IT convention here. It was sold out in 3 hours

That'll teach them to leave me out of the loop next time! "Server busy" my ass. mumble mumble
@YiJiang yeah, there was a massive stampede everywhere!
Here in Germany, it was announced a few days back around 2pm. 3pm all online stores selling touchpads were completely DOS'ed. 4pm all stores of the MediaMarkt chain were sold out in the whole country
A guy on a blog fittingly commented that if the Internet were a supermarket, there would be at least five children trampled to death by the crowd.
Good morning @Moshe!
Did you ever go back to bed?
(Looking up the list) ah, you didn't.

@EatmoreTwisters Nope.
@EatmoreTwisters That's correct.
@EatmoreTwisters Morgen. ;-)

2 hours later…

Anyone heard of the "The Rent is Too Damn High" party?

Anyone here familiar with Pandoc while using the strict subset of markdown (such as what SO uses) ?
I can't for the life of me figure out how to tell it to render a blank line.

@TimPost Not sure, but we use double enter on SO.

@Moshe I tried that. It works beautifully with markdown (pandoc), but I can't get it to stop squelching intentional new lines.
Ahh, I see, it just wants an escaped newline for a hard break
Alright, that totally messed everything else up. ARGH.

Google Trends Correlate: draw a series and get searches that match. Ex: Draw exponential growth and get #stackoverflow. http://t.co/1Jp6XAS

So glad we're above hot gf

shift it ~17 weeks and SO becomes the top match

Gradual rise followed by dropping off a cliff: google.com/trends/correlate/…
It's all MySpace.
And Windows Mobile.

lol. extra funny to me since I'm still finishing up a WM6.5 application.

Q: can someone recommend good computer cleaners for windows?

jeroCan someone recommend a good system cleaner for windows xp pro? I would actually reinstall windows in my case, but for various reasons, that would be hard to do. So I thought perhaps I could bring it to a state which is close to post-installation state... cleaning the registry, deleting unused DL...

7:55 PM
Does this symbol have a name, or are we stuck with calling it "that circle with a line through it that means not allowed"?

That is its name, isn't it?

@PopularDemand It's the no symbol

N + O

@TimStone I see, thanks.

Which is why it agitates me when people put the slash backwards.

8:02 PM
Wow, there's an ISO standard for the size of the no symbol?

@mootinator Those people should be kicked in the shins

what is the name for that right window with hot question?

I even sent xkcd a comment, because he seems like a pedantic enough sort of person.

@PopularDemand I'm sure there are a lot of surprising ISO standards.

OH WHY DO YOU MOCK ME WITH YOUR NON STANDARDS COMPLIANT NO!

8:05 PM
i want to search and see if i can disable some SE sites from showing on it

13
Q: Can you filter out certain SE sites from the hot questions list?

SamIs it possible to filter out Stack Exchange sites from the hot questions list?

@mootinator I guess the raptor looked better facing left, which skewed things..but I refuse to accept that excuse.

@mootinator ...you know "xkcd" isn't the author's actual name, yes?

Yes, I know it's Randall
And Randall knows his slash is backwards.

That was probably much, much funner for me than it was for you. I've... been doing a lot of editing just now.

See how that works?
;)

8:08 PM
+1 internets to @mootinator

Must... reach... 2k rep... from suggested edits....
(I know the cap is 1k, but I was already at about 1000 when I started.)

@TimStone thanks but is it a name for it?

StackExchangeâ„¢ MultiCollider SuperDropdownâ„¢ (but apparently also )

@TimStone i think that is in the upper left part

Oh, what were you referring to?

8:12 PM
i ask about something else- the square window in the right part that appear in the questions

Oh, the advertisements?

yes, it's like an advertisment

this card to be added to the SE shop:

Ah, I'm not sure that those have a specific name in the form of a tag, but they're generally considered network ads, I guess.

@tombull89 Complete with the "Lots of love, Grandma" written in, please.

8:17 PM
@PopularDemand that could be 50p/c extra. Or for £1/$ extra you could get "Love, Jeff xoxox" or something similar.

@tombull89 That's an apt description of a unicorn farting bacon rainbows, actually.

I think I've come across a situation wherein the correct thing to do is upvote Evan. Granted, it's not on Meta.

8:36 PM
I think I'm going to star that, because it sounds profound.

8:51 PM
Ok. So, Rhythmbox is apparently playing the same song repeatedly, but I don't know why. However, that's not the issue. The issue is that I don't know how to get it to do that when I want it.
It looks like I am mistaken. So, that mystery..um.."solved."

9:07 PM
@GeorgeMarian I reported some bugs earlier, pertaining to similar functionality earlier, but in another product.

I wish it had that option. Sometimes I do want to repeate the same song for a while.

10 hours ago, by Moshe
Just filed a few bug reports with the big fruit company that has more cash than the US government.

A bum has more cash than the US government.

What's the policy with SO accounts and minors?

9:11 PM
Anyone who we have evidence is under 13 will be suspended until we believe they are 13.

As in, can I have a joint account with my brother, as he learns Python?
He's 13 in several months.
Can I open a separate account and supervise his questions, until he's old enough? I don't want his questions getting mangled by me asking them. Also, he won't have them on his account later, unless there's some sort of admin intervention.

I don't see why you couldn't ask questions for him.
> Subscriber certifies to Stack Exchange that if Subscriber is an individual (i.e., not a corporate entity), Subscriber is at least 13 years of age.

A loophole!

So register him as Moshe's Brother, Inc., and you're set.

lol, what?

9:14 PM
LOL

@mmyers If I ask them on my account, then it messes with my rep and tags. Not that I'm against learning Python, but it might be good for him to learn to ask questions properly. It's part of the learning experience.

Might be. But we can't allow it before he's 13.
per /legal

Ok, fair enough.
He can wait two months then.

He'll still have plenty of time to learn.

Yep.
Thanks.

9:16 PM
is glad he never had to deal with those sorts of restrictions.

He just got a command prompt window.

Sites can't keep under 13s out if there aren't any.
Sites, I mean.

@mootinator raises index finger Ven I vas tirteen, ve didn't hev dees tings! Kids des days... shakes head

Usenet wasn't about to verify my age.
Though they were quick to accuse me of doing homework.
Some things never change.

We got email when I was about 12 and internet when I was 13. And I was allowed to register on sites when I was 17.

9:18 PM
He just asked "What programming language did they write Python in?"
I'll bet that's been asked.

Perl.

@mootinator And Perl, in Python.

I was going to say they wrote Python in Python.
PyPy is a Python interpreter and JIT compiler. PyPy focuses on speed, efficiency and 100% compatibility with the original CPython interpreter. Details and motivation PyPy was conceived as an implementation of Python written in Python, which enables Python developers to hack the implementation. This makes it easy to identify areas where it can be improved. The fact that PyPy is implemented in a high level language makes it also more flexible and easier to experiment with than CPython, thus allowing developers to experiment with multiple implementations of specific features. PyPy aims to...
Those dirty joke-spoilers...

Heh.

Indeed

9:21 PM
> This is so awesome. I'm already learning to program in the second chapter. - Moshe's Brother Inc.
I'm totally making a sock puppet with that name after he's allowed to use SO.

N.b: A dirty joke-spoiler is a dirty one who spoils a joke. Not to be confused with a dirty-joke spoiler.

I'm a dirty dirty-joke spoiler, so nyah.

Well, off to go see what he's up to, and get some work done. Thanks!

9:47 PM
@mmyers But corporations are people, too!

is stackoverflow.com/questions/6691147/h-264-over-rtp-rtsp-iphone/… spam? My instinct is yes, the profile reference would be sufficient and appropriate without the need for a direct link but it is topical and is declared upfront pretty honestly.

@awoodland As you say, the OP's up-front about it. Also there's some real info there, not just a link and some happy-sounding advertising words. I'm okay with it.

@PopularDemand Soylent Green, Inc., is people!

10:03 PM
@PopularDemand - I think I'll leave that one then. I did a google search of "site:stackoverflow.com netromedia" after finding an account in /review that had done nothing other than promote netromedia
there's another one too it seems: stackoverflow.com/users/410973/josh-mullingham
and they're not all as upfront from that user
but again not way off base either

10:39 PM
At least it's not someone answering their own questions either.
Q. How do I write a website? A. Douchey Spammers, Inc can help!
Wait a second...

It's THEIR fault everyone does it wrong.

11:09 PM
@mootinator I think it was a clever promotional tactic. This way, if they didn't actually get rid of the ghosts, they were free from false advertising claims.
