Q: Why do users with high reputation think they can be rude to users with low reputation?

SilverXI have been a member on Stack Overflow now for a while, and a reocurring trend is beginning to surface: Users with high reputation are rude, sarcastic, and condescending to users who have low reputation and/or have asked a perfectly legitimate question. And since there is no obvious way for users...

too many comments there... so shipping discussion here ...

1:39 AM
@waffles That's "further from the truth* you high-rep, snob. ;)

lol
I got in to a few of those back-and-forth fights back in the day ... I am a lot more apt at predicting it is about to happen these days

Yeah, I try to stay out of the shallow-end of the pool these days.
Hmm...why does SilverX sound familiar?

@waffles I just spent a few minutes looking through comments -- if someone says something in a mildly belligerent sarcasm -- containing the correct guidance -- but a bit too much sauce, per se, is there a way to edit someone else's comments? Perhaps for a moderator?
@GeorgeMarian Isn't it a brand of thermal paste or something?

@MTibbits yeah mods can edit comments

@waffles I agree with your answer, but he can be a bit too much sometimes. My hesitation in flagging was always that his advice is usually spot on -- you just have to ignore the first & last sentences... ;O)

1:53 AM
@MTibbits I think flagging as rude/offensive is a valid thing to do for underhanded comments
it is still rude

Agree.
Flagging a comment doesn't mean it needs to be deleted. That's why mods can edit.

2:17 AM
@MTibbits That's Arctic Silver. I meant specifically as a username on SO/SE. Maybe I'm thinking of something he posted on SO.
LOL...article...

@GeorgeMarian Arctic Silver. yes. I should sleep more.

heh
Apparently, I can use some sleep myself.

@MTibbits Yeah, I was hardly shocked by what the post was referring to, but people get far too invested in the whole retaliation thing...they should know better.

@TimStone indeed. Flag and move along. I've marked a few as offensive -- but I'd bet there are a few more for any wishing to end the day with a few more flags -- data.stackexchange.com/stackoverflow/q/110926/…

Anyone still around?
I have an -- am I stupid? -- I'm looking at the questions from this user and I click to go to page 2, and click to go to page 3 of raja's questions and it is only ever showing page 1?

4:12 AM
@MTibbits Awesome work on housekeeping today :)

@TimPost thanks. I just wish I was a mod on Stack Overflow - so that I could handle these flags instead of creating them.

The questions you are turning up are pretty easy to handle. Many of the accepted answers actually cite the duplicate
The only one I'm not sure of is this:
0
Q: My Android application crashes when I change screen orientation

Kumar RajaIn my application, network access is running in a thread. Whenever I change screen orientation, my application crashes. How might I resolve this?

I can't tell (due to the discussion) if the accepted answer on the suggested dup would actually help the OP.

I wasn't sure either. If you'd prefer to leave it as is -- works for me.

I'm going to validate the flag.

4:30 AM
Either way works.

4:43 AM
@MTibbits Are you using SEDE to churn these up, or a search?

I tried to link to it. But it's just not working. Something to do with URL encoding?
You should be able to see my deleted comment with the link that doesn't work on that answer.
is:answer isaccepted:1 body:"duplicate" url:"stackoverflow.com/"
@TimPost Any idea why I can't add closed:0 to that query? It would filter out a lot of noise.

Let me try

is:answer isaccepted:1 body:"duplicate" url:"*stackoverflow.com/*"
what I pasted before was lacking *

too bad we can't filter out the closed ones
@MTibbits because you're searching for answers only, and answers don't get closed

right...
crap.
@Sathya I concur.

4:52 AM
Ah yeah, doh
Would be useful to have a parent:criteria added

hi
:708593, I just responded to your other comment.

else we'll have to take the API route, I suppose, in a convoluted manner
the API also doesn't seem to present a way to bring up only open questions

@MTibbits thanks
it seems there is no meta for help or sugesstions for all SE

@mielu Meta really applies to everywhere.

5:00 AM
you mean Meta SO applies to everywhere

@TimPost I wish I could beg with reputation. Plz send featurz.

That would be a good feature request, if you feel like making it on MSO.

@mielu yep. Specific site questions should be asked on the Meta associated with that site. But if your question is generic all sites, then ask here.

Reputation is rather incidental there, it's the quality and sensibility of the idea that matters.
Stack Exchange is known to implement features that make work easier for avid users.

@TimPost sure thing. I'll be stuck in an airport again tomorrow.
@TimPost true.
@TimPost I'm out of flags, but here's a cute one to close. Matt put the # in the answer... stackoverflow.com/questions/1641597/…

@GeorgeMarian wow.

Yeah, that's just bad.

@MTibbits yes but I see proposals here that are discussed for all SE sites, sometimes(rarely) the asker says "this is only for SO". But I think the clarification is often ignored. Hmm, I will ponder more about these issues.....
To be more concrete...I was about to give an answer to that question.
but only for the sites I frequent , which do not include SO

5:54 AM
@Sathya, what is your opinion on the python-3.x tags?
2
Q: Wrong tag mapping approved

Johannes Schaub - litbI have been notified that python-3.x has been made synonymous to various non-interchangeably variants wrt python-3.x: python-3.1, python-3.2, python-3.3, and python3.2 Of that list, only python-3.2 and python3.2 is a subset of synonymous tag names and should probably get its own association...

@MTibbits checking..

take your time. Just figured I'd ask since you were around.

I don't think version specific tags should be mapped as a synonym to a branch-tag

even with the low volume?

Yeah.
I mean if you have a problem that affects only and not , you post a question with as the tag, only to find it's been marked as a issue when it's not.

6:08 AM
I see your point. I guess I just prefer having all of the questions lumped under to cut down on the number of options presented in the tag popup. The other issue is that several of the are version specific to 3.1 or 3.2. Should these be retagged?

if they are version specific, ideally, yes.
but @MTibbits I do see your concern when/if we have
On the front where I lurk about, this is how it is

@Sathya True, I don't see where to draw the distinction. Is this question version specific? The package mentioned, matlabplot, was experimental then, but not so much now.

yeah it deserves the
anyhow, I'm stepping out for now. catch ya later!

thanx.

@TimPost, you still around?
Here's one more fun one for you -- newer is a duplicate of older.

round 2
How do I go about finding other SO users on campus?
Ideas?

2:38 PM
@Moshe -- you could set out a plate of waffles...
Your best bet would probably be posting a flyer in computer lab or contacting the members of users group on campus.

@Moshe You could start with a location and age range query in the SE data explorer

hey @balpha quantserve is dragging down SE over here.

3:38 PM
/awkward. CNA is the news channel in this shot

3:59 PM
@Moshe Walk around wearing a Stack Overflow t-shirt.

4:43 PM
@TimStone Kids these days...
Oh, boy. It's brisk this morning. I'm not exactly looking forward to the downright cold morning, but this is a welcome relief from the heat.

5:45 PM
Ahh my first attempt at the Necromancer badge, now to just wait several years for 5 votes.

*not a serious attempt
I figure if my answer would have saved me a few minutes it wouldn't hurt to add it though.

Yes, there are times when low expectations are appropriate.

Hey, go figure. Plugging my mp3 player into the Line 1 mini-jack in the back of my speaker disables the optical input. I guess that makes sense, as it would have to place one of those inputs on input2, so I can have both my PC and my mp3 player issuing sound through the speakers at the same time.
Or, apparently, a better idea is remembering to turn the volume up on my speakers.
/facepalm

5:58 PM
O_o

I lost a HDD in my server on Monday. Guess what was on that HDD?
LOL Read the 2nd to last paragraph: theregister.co.uk/2011/02/28/assange_tm

6:13 PM
@GeorgeMarian shrug

My music collection. =(

Ouch.
Reminds me I have to attempt to copy mine over from my 1/2 dead HDD.

That was reminder that I still need to work on a backup strategy.

Last class of the day. Intro to C++

6:59 PM
@Moshe I remember signing up for a C++ class in college. They taught me Java. (It was actually an OOP class. LOL)

7:33 PM
The teacher just said:
> We've never lost a student to IDE

Have fun with C++

First time I wasn't annoyed by a teacher saying "the stupid computer".

cout is short for console output.
endl is end line.

whoosh

8:06 PM
Lol

I learned 3d animation in my C++ class.
The course was supposed to be an overview of language types, but not so much.
I think there was a unit on prolog.

Making changes which break other things in unexpected ways = eeevil
Like some developer saying, I don't know how to use $('*', context) in jQuery so I'm going to unbind events from the whole page and rebind just the ones I'm concerned with at this moment.

Say whaaaa?

And then putting a comment /* I don't care that this is inefficient */ at the top.
doesn't think efficiency was the main problem. Wasting my afternoon was.
</vent>

You should make a commit consisting just of changing that comment to /* I don't care that this is completely moronic */ with a commit message of Updated comment to reflect reality

9:44 PM
Wow. Just met a guy who was in my high school a few years before me.

I bought a bag of cable clamps a while ago and went to town taming the cable monster. A few days ago, I found one of them on the floor. Apparently the factory applied side of the adhesive solution isn't as good as the other side. (Which is remarkably good. You have be sure you place it where you want it the first time.)
