Q: Make chat feed awesome (or at least usable)

Yi JiangIn the Stack Overflow JavaScript room, we wanted to add the feeds of the blogs of several prominent JavaScript developers. This is what we got: This sucks. The format is totally unusable, there's no indication of which goes to what (the top link goes to the feed URL, the bottom link links to ...

Hey, can we get a dev in here to answer and this?

@YiJiang Good deal.

3rd preview of IE9 was released yesterday, with some amazing additions, like canvas element and an extensive ES5 support. I’ve been digging through it a little, to see what has changed and what hasn’t — mainly looking at JScript and DOM. I posted some of the findings on twitter, but want to also list them [...]

It works wonderfully

Q: SE Editor Toolkit

Jakub HamplThere's been an onslaught of rather difficult to read questions on SO lately. A lot of them are just plain close-fodder, but many are just from d ppl ,who spk teh internetz lingo and hence make my eyes bleed are pretty much incomprehensible without extensive parsing/editing. @PopularDemand Were you able to figure out your SVN issue?

@TimStone Uh... it turned out to be a totally different issue masquerading as the SVN issue I described to you. Still unresolved.

I see, heh. :P

So how does this Careers 2.0 thingadongdong work, anyhow?

Magic, I suspect. I haven't played around too much with it myself, though I think we'll be using it to post ads sometime in the near future.

@TimStone They must be reaching the bottom of the barrel for sending out invites because apparently the bronze Java tag badge is sufficient to earn one for a user.
But now I'm worried about how public the info is, where it's linked from, &c.

2:01 AM
@PopularDemand Weird, I haven't got one, though I suspect that's because of my age more than anything else

Hmm, apparently they haven't gone so far as to give one to bronze mod_rewrite badge holders ;)
As far as the privacy bit, I'm not entirely sure, I know there was a Meta post not too long ago about avoiding Google indexing that was marked [status-completed], but beyond that..

@YiJiang Hm. Interesting. I lied about my age, which anyone who took two seconds to compare my profiles on different sites would know.

Well, I have a silver jQuery badge, bronze JavaScript CSS and HTML

@YiJiang Now I have no idea how I qualified for an invite. Maybe they put stickers on the WOB.

@PopularDemand I've always just assumed you were stuck in some sort of time rift.

2:04 AM
@TimStone Merely a coincidence.

Ah, of course, of course.

Argh, stupid Board Games. My answer is still downvoted.

Q: css menu advices.

susanhello i got a menu like that: enter link description here and i have no idea how to make this in css. do you know any good tutorial and the name of this type menu?

hates on metacity

@Trufa Agree, closing

So, I turned off Compiz and that disabled some fixes. Particularly, moving windows using keybinds within one monitor. With metacity, it considers both monitors as one screen. Fine, I can get used to that.
For some reason, it now refuses to move a window at all. Well, actually it moves the window, but it doesn't remain there. It springs right back in to its old location.
/headdesk

interesting

Apparently, it works ok with a maximized window. Well, sorta. It toggles fullscreen mode.
LOL

4:41 AM
@YiJiang thanks!? :)

Anyway, on a positive note. I thought I totally bombed my phone interview today. I now I have another interview on Thursday with another founder of the company. :)

@Trufa: nothing wrong with downvoting. You don't have to reserve that for questions with malicious itent.

glad for the new interview, sorry for the bombed interview

@drachenstern Thanks. Apparently, it wasn't as bad as I thought. Just goes to show that sometimes it's hard to read these things. :)

@MichaelPetrotta That came out too soft, I don't reserve, but I (and is only my opinion) like to distinguish between close and down-vote

4:44 AM
that's fair.

@MichaelPetrotta I try to comment and guide (specially the new users), the excpetion is when they don't re-consider or reply in a rude manner, then I do down-vote
I tend to think that a comment is more instructive and useful that an down-vote in this cases
Too many people are just too vBulletinizised

@Zypher see how I got everyone in here chatting again? ;)
Now watch me goto bed soon

@drachenstern dammit, what did ya do that for?!?

@Trufa: for the poster, I agree. But downvotes are useful for future readers, who need to gauge how useful a Q or A is.

@RebeccaChernoff S&Gs ;)

I don't know what vBulletinizised means, but it can't be good.

@drachenstern Heh. I was wondering who that is as well. I'll have to watch it once I can skip the commercials.

@GeorgeMarian yes. I was not impressed.
What's the opposite of impressed. I was almost that.

@drachenstern Good question. Underwhelmed, comes to mind, but that's not quite the opposite.

@GeorgeMarian :p I know what the opposite is ;)

One thing I realize I miss from the envelop is that there's now no more 'notification' for when someone edits one of your posts.

I think it would be nice to be informed in someway, for instance on Meta when one of your post is marked

can someone just shoot that kid? He's making the roast worse, not better.
Except when the rest of the group gets to dig on him more than Trump

Of course most of the time they comment, but sometimes they don't, and you miss it until you go by the question again and is surprised that somehow, the problem is now fixed!

@YiJiang wait, they used to tell you that?

@drachenstern Yeah, when someone edits your post the envelop lights up

@YiJiang I had not been aware of that
Yay Gilbert Godfried is there
I had to quit following him on twitter, he's just too effing rough

5:37 AM
Hang on, envelop is the verb, and envelope is the noun, right?

@YiJiang, go ask on EL&U, but yes, I think so...

@Benjol It is, yes. I just checked the dictionary

@YiJiang I think so, yes. However, envelop is not a commonly used verb when referring to the piece of paper.
it's usually more about clouds or robes or that sort of thing

Tim Minchin is just excellent :)

ok, I've been up way too long. I'm debating calling building security on the neighbors for playing their music, but it's not too bad. At least I like their choice in music.

@drachenstern, good night (I hope)

@Benjol thanks, it should be

@Benjol ah =( Was looking forward to checking some of my progress last month!
@Benjol any idea if there is a stack app that lets you query SO live? I'm searching now and found something . but doesn't quite let you query the data anyhow

@giddy, there's better than that, there's an API - but you can't run sql queries on it. What are you trying to do?

See how many edits I made.

@giddy, doesn't look like that's possible - you can get revisions, but by post, not by user...
calling @waffles...

I'm thinking now, of just using a .net client for the API to query this data
@Benjol oh! =(
@Benjol yep your right..

A: Adding Favorites to the Stack Exchange global inbox

Richard aka cyberkiwiI don't know if this will work, but this idea came to me for notifying users of changes to favourites. I think something like this innocuous little icon to the left of the user name (and also the tiny v-like dropdown left of it). It seems to tell me something has happened, like, "you've got mai...

@drachenstern funny the things you don't realize you've lost. I kept wondering why I have fewer things to follow up.. until I realized notification of changes to favourites has gone

@Richardakacyberkiwi:

Q: What are favourites for?

BenjolKevin recently asked a question about how to handle favourite changes, and whether to put them in the global inbox. The problem is that the 'use case' for favourites is (I think) not the same for everyone. I think it would be useful for the team, and interesting for the rest of us, to know what...

Oh maaaan

This stinks
Anyway, back to work. Later everyone!

@Pekka, (when you come back), Jeff's answered here: meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/83253/…

@Benjol thanks. I'm okay with that answer somehow

btw

@badpssockpuppet He's the not the Messiah, he's a very naughty boy

@badpssockpuppet So where will that be displayed? Or is it for internal use only?

@YiJiang On the moderator only user logs

'Tried to self suspend himself'?

Bear with me, I had a huge sleep deficit that day :P

8:10 AM
How do you 'self suspend' yourself anyway?

By going to your own user page, clicking 'mod' then 'suspend', filling in the form and hey presto!

Oh, you uh, uh huh... well, I don't see that option ;)

@YiJiang Good job they've banned under-age users with that kind of kinky activity going on here :)

8:27 AM
@Benjol You have a knack for asking and answering the question. Two-pronged

@Richardakacyberkiwi, er, is that a compliment? :)
I knew that I had an answer, but not all the answers
What is interesting is that for both you and I, some favourites we need notifications for and others not. That kind of indicates to me that something is screwed up, but I'm not sure what

@Benjol Is that a compliment? err.. two-pronged :)
Know your enemy -Jeff Atwood Did you know that the enemy had favourites AND monitor as separate functionality? Now that's an idea.

@Richardakacyberkiwi, hm, gonna head of to SEDE now to see how bad I really am :)

@Benjol Have I done something wrong? 34/150 should be >20%, near the very top of this query data.stackexchange.com/stackoverflow/qe/1115/… But I don't see it

@Richardakacyberkiwi, have you allowed for the fact that you can answer your own question multiple times? looking now

Q: How to run saved query against another stack exchange site in Data Explorer

Richard aka cyberkiwiI have a saved query to find percentage of Self-Answered questions (no restriction on self-accepted) on Data Explorer. http://data.stackexchange.com/stackoverflow/s/1115/self-answered-questions How do I run that against another site? I tried http://data.stackexchange.com/metastackoverflow/s/1...

Is it a sin to tag a question with support + bug + feature-request?

@Richardakacyberkiwi, answered, btw

@Richardakacyberkiwi By the way if you declare you user id like this - it gives you a text box to enter your user id instead of hard coding it

@Benjol Thanks. Accepting when I can. support=benjol, bug=runtime error, feature-request=nevermind (little icons does it)

DECLARE @UserId int = ##UserId##

Can someone explain what "by time" is supposed to do in the new reputation page?
I can't see much difference

9:25 AM
@Benjol The query has Q.OwnerUserID != ##UserId##
by time = in time order of rep change. by post = by rep change largest to smallest (within a day)

@Richardakacyberkiwi ok, but overall, by day. I guess I was expecting by time of day:)

I see @sbi elected to ignore my request to continue discussion on chat
he doesn't get to have a reply, then.
(This note to not make it appear like I have nothing to reply)

:) Anyway, I still think that particular question of mine raised a valid point, even if I'm not to keen to see it flogged to death..

And since the topic here is what you're talking about, well, I guess that means I don't know what I'm talking about either.

@Pekka The confusication of this room is almost complete!

@Benjol haha! "some balpha guy"

@balpha For a moment, I thought he was just being funny...

Well, I haven't quite reached celebrity status yet. For obious reasons, I blame @RebeccaChernoff for this.

good afternoon gentlemen

@systempuntoout Good afternoon, Sir.
How are things in Italy?
Is the weather as lovely as it is here?

It's raining :(

1:45 PM
Aww, that's too bad

is it lovely in Germany?

It is! Almost like summer
Nights are still cold as hell, but the days are nice.

maybe where you are

:D, did you see the match last night?

(I learned a lesson about the cold nights yesterday, I went out camping and couldn't sleep all damn night :)

1:47 PM
I'm near Milan

@systempuntoout I must admit I have no idea what you mean! But I heard football-y noises coming out of the neighouring flats. :)
@balpha aww, Berlin is further north, yeah
To me, Berlin feels like Finland somehow, weather-wise

yes, I'm talking about that kind of noises

I am totally sports illiterate. Was there a match? Between who?

Inter Milan - Bayer Munchen

Ahhh! I see.
Who won?

1:48 PM
Inter :P

Only just...

I see, I see! I am not getting any football education anymore - my brothers used to keep me posted about the most essential things so I don't embarrass myself in conversations, but we live in different parts of the country now.

@systempuntoout 1-0? :P

That must have been tragic for Bayern.

(I have no clue, all I know is Inter needed 2 goals and a win to pass)

1:50 PM
3-2
it was 0-1 for Bayern on the first match here in Italy
last night it ended 2-3 for Internazionale
by the way, in case of Devdays news, we have to push for a Germany conference
maybe in Berlin, I have to visit it someday
I heard it's beautiful

Yeah. Berlin is the most obvious choice, and it's nice
and fairly affordable

tempted to flag sport as offensive :)
2

Hahaha!

yep, sorry :)

in fairness, we did do religion yesterday morning, so all's fair :)

1:54 PM
Berliners are about as polite and well-groomed as New Yorkers (if the Soup Nazi is a typical New Yorker - I've never been), which may be a bit of a shock for some though

@Benjol What is this sport thing? Is it edible?
2

I take it @balpha is not a native then...
@YiJiang If it was I might be more interested :)

@YiJiang no, it's some kind of TV show apparently
Very successful across the globe

I loved the New Yorkers though

@Benjol I'm not (I moved here two years ago), but @Pekka's characterization is pretty off, too :)
of both New Yorkers and Berliners

1:56 PM
@Pekka The Soup Nazi is not a typical anything.

@PopularDemand I guess not.

@balpha You're not native German? The moar you know.

yes, I am. just not a native Berliner
ICH BIN KEIN BERLINER
2

@balpha Well, you have the larger experience in the matter... It's my consistent impression though. Much however may be down to the dialect, which can seem fairly... direct without necessarily being rough.
