@SankarGanesh OK, so I'll just start a flamewar, buy a Mac :)

@SankarGanesh are you looking to purchase something in the US?

@drachenstern Nope. Got frustrated typing left-handed and just sat around with an icepack for most of the week.
link?

Q: Site's too cold, I'll go someplace warm

Lance RobertsIn this extremely popular feature request that the Jeff doesn't want to implement, he has removed the feature-request tag instead of adding a status, just so it won't show on his list of stuff that he doesn't want to take care of, i.e. sweeping it under the rug. Both jinguy and I asked him to pu...

@Shog9 yeah, had to look it up :p

@LoïcWolff: Thank you very Much for your suggestion

@drachenstern many thanks

5:01 PM
@SankarGanesh I don't think that was his intent.
@Sankar Ok, let's start over: Do you have a budget for this new box?

3
Q: What factors should be taken into consideration by someone building a custom PC?

Lord TorgamusI've been a laptop-only user for almost a decade now, but I'm thinking of building myself a desktop soon so I can have more power. While doing some preliminary research, I came across the old-ish SU question Is it still cheaper to build your own PC?. In the spirit of making questions less locali...

@drachenstern How can i buy my laptop from us living in India, will it makes cheaper or make my budget more higher

@Shog9 OH MY GOD! What are you doing with a body?
2

@SankarGanesh that's my point. I don't know either. You need to focus your search on what you can purchase easily from Indian markets.

@PopularDemand Decided to give it a try... VERDICT: too much trouble.
2

5:03 PM
@drachenstern i m thinking of i can buy a laptop, price is doesnot a matter,but i want quality

@SankarGanesh then buy it from some company in this list: {HP, Dell, Lenovo, Sony, Toshiba, Fujitsu, Gateway, Asus, do-you-see-where-I'm-going-with-this?}

Oh, laptop, missed that.

@drachenstern Brilliant... Voted to delete and re-added to the deleted questions archive.

In other words, the vendor isn't so important.
@Shog9 I know, brilliant yes? Love the failed-ragequit
@SankarGanesh Next question: What do you intend to do with this laptop? Is portability more important, or is having more desktop space at one time more important?
Will you be using this laptop to play games or work with music or play videos?
Do you see the questions involved? We need as much of a specification on usage for this as we would for a program.

@drachenstern i have my personal pc in my hometown, but last two years i m working 800km away from my hometown , so i m not able to do my learning on weekends, so i had planned now to buy a new lap and start developing my own projects on weekends

5:07 PM
Otherwise I would just say, goto HP or Dell, buy a cheapish laptop, rinse and repeat in 6-8 months
@SankarGanesh will you be carrying this laptop often or will it primarily be only at the 800km away other location?

@drachenstern yes i will be carrying this laptop always with me, if sleep does not comes in night, then i will start to help peoples on Stack overflow

@SankarGanesh noble goals, I like that :p ~ I would suggest then a 15" or smaller computer. Since you're likely to be mobile a lot, weight will be important.
Next question: What is your primary development environment?
vi/emacs? Visual Studio? Eclipse? gedit/notepad?
Windows? Ubuntu?

@drachenstern Eclipise and i love Ubuntu, but i need Windows too

@SankarGanesh do you need this laptop to dual-boot or will you run a VM?

(If you say XCode on OS/X, that'll make the decision dramatically easier...)

5:10 PM
What will you use Windows for?
@Shog9 :p I know right?

@drachenstern to to use VB codes sometimes

@SankarGanesh .NET or 6?

@drachenstern No VB6

(cos technically mono would be "good enough" for .NET)
@SankarGanesh does that mean "I do not use VB6" or "No to .NET, I need VB6"?

@drachenstern mate, i am java developer , but i had planned to learn c# and also i m Visual Basic Expert in my college days, inorder to recall my VB projects, i will spend some time in VB , honestly i wonot spend much time in .NET

5:15 PM
@SankarGanesh ok, see that helps me have better understanding. Yay! So then you can do the VB stuff in a VM and you can run Ubuntu as your primary OS, if that's what you want. Or flip-flop. Since Eclipse and Java run on both platforms. So is using Ubuntu (or another OS choice) important to you or a bonus?

@drachenstern absolutely, your right, i like you very much

@drachenstern Hey, as long as you understand, everything's good. I can't understand.

@SankarGanesh haha, I get what you mean, but that's not how we say it here ;)

VB in a VM just sounds like a good idea in general

@Shog9 doesn't it tho? :p
So I think that the Mac option, while made in humorous intent, is probably the best suggestion here.
They're light, have good international support (including chargers), and are very flexible with the availability of VMs and the like

5:19 PM
Not to mention, they've traditionally had pretty decent resale value... So if you plan on replacing it within a few years you'll have at least some chance of getting more than $100 for it

@drachenstern basically i was very excited the way you speaks, i m very afraid to speak with unknown guys, but now my MS in psychology made me more and more better, i knew i still have to improve my communication, you are nice gentleman, once again i like you

Argh

@badp hi

How long has this Chrome effect been there for Windows, where on-hover highlighting of tabs is a 'sphere' of light following your cursor?

@SankarGanesh "basically I'm nervous to talk with people outside of my comfort-zone, because I know I'm an outsider, and my culture frowns on that, but now I can see that my MS in psychology helps me to understand people better, and while I have a bit to improve in my communication, I appreciate that you're being so welcoming."

5:21 PM
I feel stalked now
@SankarGanesh Hey

Also, macs come with iMovie, which is 100x less silly than windows movie maker.

@badp I don't know what you mean
@mootinator :p
@Shog9 yeah, that's the idea

@drachenstern On Chrome Dev for Windows, move the mouse from one end of a tab to the other

is the 13.3 the only MB or is there a 15" MB as well?
@badp only on the tab bar?
do I drag the tab or just the mouse?

@drachenstern yes, just hover

5:22 PM
@badp oh Chrome Dev ... I don't use that.
ask @RebeccaChernoff she may know

@drachenstern avesome words, thank you gentleman

The post it was closed as a dupe of has been deleted.

@PopularDemand that happens a lot
@SankarGanesh however, as a developer, you may get more usage out of apple.com/in/macbookpro

5:23 PM
However, price is a limiting concern there. In the US they are already considered overpriced
@RebeccaChernoff you use chrome dev right? Can you repro/comment?

@drachenstern nice suggestion

there was no need to disturb her for this one

3 mins ago, by badp
How long has this Chrome effect been there for Windows, where on-hover highlighting of tabs is a 'sphere' of light following your cursor?
@badp bah, she's a dev, she gets it. She can (and will) ignore us if she's busy

@mootinator: Mate, tell about your child name to me

except she just switched to here :P

5:25 PM
@badp WOOOOOOLF!

Yes, I use Chrome Dev. I see no sphere of light, heh.

@SankarGanesh Isabella...

@SankarGanesh "can I ask about your child? how old? he or she?" something like that ...

@mootinator Can I know the gender of your child

Any connection to the Twilight series of flamboyant vampire movies is strictly coincidental.
@SankarGanesh Isabella is usually given to a female.

5:27 PM
This is a list of notable and commonly used emoticons or textual portrayals of a writer's mood or facial expression in the form of icons. The Western use of emoticons is much different than the Eastern use, and Internet forums, such as 2channel, and Internet forums, typically, show expressions in their own ways. In recent times, graphic representations, both static and animated, have taken the place of traditional emoticons in the form of icons. Western The emoticon in Western style is written most often from left to right. Thus, most commonly, one will see the eyes on the left, followed...
^^^^ I was not aware

@mootinator hmmm,

@drachenstern Zoinks, that list has grown in 13 years :/

@mootinator try this one :p en.wikipedia.org/w/…

I'm surprised the earliest revision was that extensive.
;_;

@drachenstern I got shocked when i m seeing this Apple Macbook Pro Price in India – Rs.99,500/- Indian Rupee (INR)

5:33 PM
@SankarGanesh Yeah, that's what I was saying ~ They are considered rather expensive here.
@mootinator 2007. Ten years too late. It should've been longer ;)

@drachenstern ok no probs let me wait for 4 or 5 months , save money and buy it ,may be in the month of may or june

$2191.63 current equiv USD

@mootinator ow that hurts my eyes
@SankarGanesh which macbook pro were you looking at?

Hurting eyes was in style in the 90s.

5:38 PM
@mootinator so was DaveBarry </instantrimshot>

Hah

:530372 this one Apple Macbook Pro 15-inch
Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4GHz

@SankarGanesh good choice.

@drachenstern Thanks

So the cost in Rupees to USD is pretty well equivalent. That's roughly what we would have to pay for a similar laptop here
For point of comparison, given my expected budget come June (finally about to be done with outstanding debt!!! :D :D ) that would take me about 4 months of saving or 2 months of busting my ass and penny pinching to purchase.

5:44 PM
@drachenstern lol

@SankarGanesh I would suggest maps.google.com

@drachenstern I've learned that one doesn't mention "about to be done with outstanding debt" to one's wife, or that moment never actually arrives.

@mootinator are you kidding? She's ready for it

@mootinator I, too, am confused by this statement.

heheh

5:49 PM
our plan is to save about $8k by christmas just for purchasing some APPL stuffs. We're thinking dual MBPs and dual iPads
That doesn't count the flat panel TV we're finally going to be able to afford (we currently have a 23" TV in the living room :\ )

I mentioned the same in January and it was taken to mean "Time to take on new outstanding debt!"

@drachenstern You have an $8k personal Christmas budget?! I'm impressed.

Getting back out from under her grandmother's house and getting all those bills paid off (you do what you can to help family when the economy collapses) set us back quite a bit

Low interest rates are habit forming.

@PopularDemand that's what we plan on spending on ourselves. That doesn't count the gifts that we want to buy for a few family members. We'll probably save $12k towards christmas stuff. We'll also probably not buy our stuff till the first of the year, haven't decided if there's liable to be cheaper things in Jan, figure I'll leave that till we have $8k in the bank ;)
@mootinator not having credit is habit forming too

5:52 PM
@drachenstern: Do u have children's

@drachenstern That's what I meant by "personal."

@SankarGanesh I have two children. They walk on four legs and eat out of a bowl on the floor.
@PopularDemand :p

@drachenstern how they walk on four legs, Impossible

@SankarGanesh consider again. What walks on four legs?
That's a pretty close match to my older one

@drachenstern animals, am i right, how can i call you,because yesterday you are said donot use the word my dear friend, then tell me how can i call you

5:55 PM
She's ~7

@drachenstern: hmmm, nice
@drachenstern do you got married??

@SankarGanesh you don't need to say "my dear friend", so instead of saying "@drachenstern: my dear friend, will you tell me about your children" say "@drachenstern tell me about your kids?"
@SankarGanesh Seven years ago, come August.
My other one looks like this, sorta.
They're both girls, both spayed, both rescue dogs, don't know the lineage of either one.

@drachenstern Nice

My current "office":

@mootinator is it your baby

6:05 PM
@SankarGanesh I hope so. ;)

@SankarGanesh nah, some random kid he found on the internet :p

@SankarGanesh Whoa, there's a baby there! I was looking at the monitor, of course.

@mootinator did she build a straw house, a stick house, or a brick house? :p
@PopularDemand that's no monitor, it's a <strike>space station</strike> TV!

@drachenstern Plywood.

@mootinator lmao

6:06 PM
@mootinator hmm, what lovely and smiling face, she have, if got anger then i want to see your child, her smiles removes my anger, like sun melts the snow,hahaha, lol

@PopularDemand I m giving +10000 for your comments about that lovable child
@drachenstern lol

damn, I thought they did that too. Ah well

@mootinator you are very lucky for having a lovely child

@Shog9 I play a pretty mean jazz Trombone.

@mootinator See? Profile written!
It's not about what you write, it's about what the folks reading it assume

7:22 PM
@Zypher there?

@DanGrossman Why does the map randomly have a marker in northern Asia? :P

Zypher.email++
That's dans location :-)

@TimStone Because there's a single person out there and nobody nearby to cluster with

Ahh.

7:29 PM
@DanGrossman The pins for single users are both disturbing and unclear imho :)

If you zoom in, all those clusters eventually become individual markers

Ah, indeed they do.

Guess who's under the {2}? :)

@DanGrossman maybe @Zypher?

@balpha I think it's me and @TimStone :)

7:33 PM
Apparently careers doesn't expect the first thing you write in your profile to be a codeblock.

Time to update my browser definitions again, too many new Chrome 11's...

@DanGrossman well, we'll never know, because whoever it is is covered by something blue

I broke it, I broke it...

Hmm.. :P

Post on meta, gain reputation

lmao @balpha, nice answer. :P

If Jeff is entitled to an attitude, so am I :)

Naturally :)
Don't look up, there's secrets there.

oohhhhh secrets?

@DanGrossman what's that from?

7:46 PM
ok active on what?

@DanGrossman My pin is not right on top of my location. I am disappointed. (;

@Zypher w3counter.com, which includes you looking at who's active on w3counter.com (recursion!!)

haha
interesting
then @balpha no i would show up as NYC right now ... although my house is covered by the 2

@Zypher He's been spoiled by that not having to "come into work" thing. :P

Speaking of which, I noticed that gas has gone up 20 cents since the last time I had to buy gas. Heh.

7:51 PM
Ergh...
Oh wait, you buy it in gallons there.
That's more like 5 cents/L

It was $2.95 or $2.98 last time I bought gas. Today it is $3.19/gal

@RebeccaChernoff Wow, how'd you burn through a whole tank in one day?

@PopularDemand She does burnouts down the street.

@RebeccaChernoff I was implying that gas prices rise rapidly.

7:55 PM
Eh, not really.
generally

Consider instability in oil producing countries.

and this is the first time it's ever gone over $3 here I think. We narrowly missed it in the past spikes.
@Moshe yeah
Was just surprising to me, that's all.

@RebeccaChernoff Wow. I've definitely paid $4.25. Not lately, of course.

I...haven't been out much recently. I think it's $3.1x-ish.

Hmm, ok, I take it back.

@DanGrossman cos this site is lucrative to spam scrapers ... and I have noticed gmail getting a little poorer at blocking spam lately. Not like my information is hard for a human to figure out, but I'ld rather not help the scrapers any more

My e-mail is so well distributed across the web, apparently it's used as a fake From: address in spam! webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?t=280251

8:13 PM
Oooh, I had one of those once. :/

I never get spam myself, though. Rackspace must have awesomer filters than Gmail.

I used to use my.email.address@canada.com but I found it prevented people from sending me real mail.

A lot of signup forms still claim dan@dangrossman.info isn't a valid e-mail address.
I do own dangrossman.net and dgrossman.com now, but I'm kinda attached to my original domain
dangrossman.com is a Plesk Domain Default Page, and he's registered the domain for years into the future. :shakes fist:

Nothing to see here. Move along.

LOL. OK :-)
@RebeccaChernoff Today's just awful over here, so this is all the better for me. Digesting will be done as soon as possible

Also remember, if @badp ever tries to pin blame or fault on me, I didn't do it. Also also, ok.

@TheRenamedException Recommend calling it "digestion" henceforth.

@RebeccaChernoff So you didn't make SE awesomer
oh well

8:33 PM
Nope. I made it epicer. (;

If I can't pin praise on you I'll try and resort to pinning blame on what you didn't do, but should've. Like marking that particular feature-request status-completed.

Heh, clever.

Q: Area 51 - 51 Character Bug

@drachenstern Seriously? I'm flagging it

@MichaelMrozek The only reason I didn't immediately go for it was the big affiliation banner at the top.

Alright, TF2 it is.

8:56 PM
@drachenstern As for "typographical nonsense," imagine seeing the top of this post on /review....

@MichaelMrozek I'm not saying it's a great piece of software, I'm just saying the SME should be allowed to say "hey we're not total pieces of shit" and not get flagged instantly as spam ...
@PopularDemand interesting

Just to verify: It is desired that we make use of our flags right? Because I flagged some very old answers now (thank you answers) and I'm nearly out of flags (and I had a lot ;))

The question was "how can I make this stop"; the answer was 30% "you don't want to make it stop" and 140% "let me tell you why our software is awesome and you should love our popups"

@MichaelMrozek That's not spam, though, that's just a bad answer.

@PopularDemand It's spam if they packed most of the answer full of "our product is the BOMB!" sentences. If a question asks about a product and somebody answers with more than 50% unrelated sentences about how that product is awesome, I flag it; it's not ok just because the question happened to mention that product
