Is StackOverflow.com really the place to ask how to setup PHP and MySQL? Or should it be SuperUser.com or ServerFault.com instead?

Q: Easiest way to activate PHP and MySQL on Mac OS 10.6 (Snow Leopard)?

mattWhat is the easiest way to activate PHP and MySQL on Mac OS 10.6 (Snow Leopard)? I'd prefer to use any built in versions before resorting to downloading from the PHP or MySQL websites. I'm comfortable at the command line in Terminal.

For me, this sounds like a SuperUser.com question, but from a developer....

yawn
@Jonas Not SerferFault

@Jonas the question has nothing to do with programming. so SU or maybe Apple.SE

yeah, Apple is what I'm thinking

I'd like to see it on Apple, but I think it's borderline

I agree that Apple would be the best site, but can we migrate questions to the Apple-se site?

1:10 PM
Mods can

Dr @badp, where's that excellent flowchart?

The Apple site is not a Off-topic alternative, if I vote to close..

@Jonas Flag the question for mod attention mentioning the question would belong on Apple

@badpDr Ok, I will flag the question for the mods then...

otherwise the question will get migrated to SU I guess

1:11 PM
@Jonas and in the meantime, ask for the question to be cleaned up. too many answer that should be question/comment

@LoïcWolff I have already flagged the question, sorry.
I am cleaning up and flagging questions with the [mac] tag now, since many of them are off-topic or should better be tagged [osx]

@Moshe what's the 12th achievement?

But questions can't be migrated to DBA.stackexhange.com I guess?
This is a question for Apple or DBA, but not StackOverflow.com

Q: What MySQL client application would you recommend for Mac OS X?

mlambieMy colleagues and I are looking for alternative client tools for Mac OS X. I tend to prefer the text-based interface and we have PHPMyAdmin installed on our development servers (Linux). What are your recommendations? (One recommendation per answer please, so people can up-mod individual recom...

> I'm starting to wonder how many "Where do I start learning programming?" and "Need thesis project ideas..." questions I can migrate to Programmers before ChrisF and the other Programmers moderators start plotting my murder.

Can somebody please help this guy write better titles?

1:34 PM
I went to try and retitle this:

Q: one more time about loop that doesn't work

unitI have asked a couple of questions about this for loop: String[] book = new String [ISBN_NUM]; bookNum.replaceAll("-",""); if (bookNum.length()!=ISBN_NUM) throw new ISBNException ("ISBN "+ bookNum + " must be 10 characters"); for (int i=0;i<bookNum.length();i++) { if (Char...

then I considered I'd have to retitle:

@badpDr hammer time

got a question regarding SE Data Explorer, users, and votes

Awww crap, another stupid accepted suggested edit: stackoverflow.com/suggested-edits/8022
(The excerpt text is ridiculously long, and should be split, with half going into the wiki itself)
Also, copy + paste Wikipedia I believe requires attribution

can I query Data Explorer for the top voters of SU?

2:41 PM
@TimStone You there?

I should change my meta name to "badp, badp, badp, badp, badp"
3
then start closing questions

@badpDr Ahahahahaha

@badpDr try to add the little diamond, too.

I don't think the lozenge is allowed :)

@badpDr You're a mod on Gaming, your last badp will have a diamond there

2:45 PM
The meta description should mention: "now in surround 5.1"

@YiJiang What's up?

@TimStone You pushed that supermassive update to the SEChatMod script, right?

Yeah

I'm thinking of pinning a message asking users to update in the js room as well as add a simple 'updated' bubble to the gh-pages

alexThese are just a few examples of people not knowing the difference between 3 very different things: Can I keep the “my pretty pony” avatar? Why is my avatar suddenly a gay horse? @YiJiang Cool. There's a StackApps posting for it now too, if you didn't see.

@TimStone sending some free StackApps rep your way

Nooooooooo, my 10:00 meeting has been moved to 2:30 again...I could have continued sleeping, argh.
Hooray!

Watch this, I bet I have to restart to install my video drivers :(
Thanks ATI

Yay. Mission accomplished!
Good mornin' folks.

I foresee a productivity this morning approaching zero ... why did I think it was a good idea to re-institute having a third monitor?

Good catch on that typo -- that was the only problem with that post

Hahah, @RebeccaChernoff, stealing my thunder! (See tooltip of the second link) :p
@MichaelMrozek ...Wow shakes head

@MichaelMrozek lol

@TimStone I didn't even know you could give links tooltips. I'm going to abuse that until I get banned

@drachenstern By investing your time in current capital production you create more capacity to produce goods in the future. (Yeah, too much economics 101 stuck in my head right now)

3:25 PM
@MichaelMrozek Oh, really?

I guess it says it in the hyperlink dialog; I don't think I've ever used it, I just type the markdown

LOL, someone's revenge downvoting me on SO :-p

Your Markdown-fu is clearly lacking.
@TheRenamedException ..For what? O_o

Changing his gravatar back to the one I didn't make

3:27 PM
...or at least that's what I assume the downvoter is doing

@MichaelMrozek I switch every couple days, you and Tim were tied!
@TimStone no idea, but a few of my meta answers have amounted to "No, you're stupid" recently so I assume that's why

Wait I'm confused. That link goes to chat not the RFC2SE post.

@TheRenamedException We need more of that on Meta, good job ;)

@RebeccaChernoff Uh, finger slipped...

3:29 PM
@RebeccaChernoff You added the same link to the RFC post; she meant she found it there and copied it into her answer

What's... RFC?

shouldn't that tooltip go on the 1st link not the 2nd?
RFC2SE = Recent Feature Changes to Stack Exchange post.

@RebeccaChernoff I just assumed that Grace Note thought you had added the link to Marc's chat message (to the...RFC2SE...thingadongdong). :P

is still confused

@RebeccaChernoff I guess both are linked from the RFC post; she probably found the link to Marc's post before she stole the chat link from your post

3:31 PM
go easy on me I just got here (;
I'd never seen the chat message until now (:

I was just joking around anyway, but apparently you're not awake enough for that yet. ;)

Oh, @TimStone added it. Well, I have no idea then. Maybe she assumed it was you like I did?
I don't try to understand Grace Note

Oh, I get it now.

@TheRenamedException Hmm, weird.

Mwuahahahaha, take that @TimStone!

3:33 PM
:p

(better?)

Sure, all is right with the world now.
Well, except for my meeting getting moved. That continues to make me sad.

Yup, I definitely think it is too early in the morning...

@YiJiang that's my argument too, but there's some pesky guy who signs my paychecks who wants immediate return on his particular investment of capital (forgive the delayed response, I hit spacebar while a popup window was invading my screen asking to reboot :\ )

@GeorgeMarian The problem really is that we all went to sleep.

3:35 PM
@TimStone Ah, yes. Good point.

@RebeccaChernoff your challenge to me to do the 10K ServerFault challenge has been failing. Somehow I seem to be only answering questions on MSO. I think I got confused somewhere along the way, LOL
Maybe I'll do my own 10K MSO challenge...

Also, hooray, the userscript is moving up the ranks. Now we just have to bypass two balpha and two badp scripts to reach the top spot, mwuahah.

Yey!
@TimStone I have some serious catch-up to do today, but I hope to fix my status script this afternoon

@TheRenamedException Yeah, I'm hope to have time to work on the Town Hall script later tonight.

EL&U on Wednesday

3:39 PM
Ok, I've given up on my third monitor for the time being, I don't think it has win7 support (stupid ATI Radeon grafx)
I would offer to do that transcript but I'm participating, seems a conflict of interest

Speaking of my awesome ATI cards...I want to upgrade them, but I'm always wary about the size of new cards.
@drachenstern How many candidates are there?

7 (apparently I don't RC)

@drachenstern Yes I feel it would be a conflict of interest
@drachenstern I almost voted for you yesterday, but decided I really should wait until after the town hall

@TheRenamedException yes, except can't you change your votes afterwards? :p ~ I'm not upset, I expect you to vote for the best moderator candidate.

3:41 PM
I am not necessarily the best moderator candidate, I am only a person who put my hat in the ring ;)
@YiJiang isn't it bedtime? :p

@TimStone I'm glad I tend to buy huge cases. Not so glad that it's a good thing for the ever increasing size of the vid cards.

@drachenstern I should go before @RebeccaChernoff bans me...

@drachenstern no, you can't, not after like 5 minutes

@TheRenamedException oh how interesting. In that case, don't vote :p

@drachenstern I held off voting for you because I need to see how you'll respond to:
in Seasoned Advice Town Hall Chat on The Stack Exchange Network Chat, Feb 16 at 0:56, by Michael Mrozek
You've got mad and are abusing your mod powers. A dev is on the way to suspend you for life. You only have time to ban one person before they get to you. Do you suspend: Rebecca Chernoff, Jeff Atwood, Josh, or whichever innocent user's profile you can find first

3:43 PM
@YiJiang Ahahah

@TheRenamedException the obvious answer is I don't bother with it. I wait and slowly infiltrate the ranks of SOIS by first becoming a high-ranking chat member, then developing userscripts that people on the sites enjoy using, then getting hired on as a community manager, then I go mad with power as a dev! :p Yatta!

/me goes to vote for someone else...

@TimStone did you break /me support????

I've got a chat message that does not appear to get through, but actually has gotten through, weird

3:46 PM
@TheRenamedException Oh, you should probably switch back to the main repository and update.

@drachenstern's answer, except the first thing I do as a dev is 'DROP table users', then go find all the backup facilities and burn them.

So yes, but I fixed it, and I also pushed the changes to Rebecca's GitHub

@drachenstern I believe this is known as "the rchern syndrome". Symptoms include backwards smiling and uncontrollable "Oy" outbursts

I mean, if I had gone mad, I assume I wouldn't be above a little arson.

@TheRenamedException Oy! You don't say! (:

3:47 PM
@TimStone thanks will do

@YiJiang Yeah, that's happened to me before once or twice, though usually on mobile.

@mootinator here, have a star ;)

@mootinator I think UPDATE users SET name="Oy!" WHERE 1 would be so much better!

@MichaelMrozek boo, we can't see that question, us humble <10k user

3:49 PM
@statuscompleted Lucky for you I quoted it then :)
The question was "I am to attend a webinar tomorrow at 12:00 PM EST. Is that Midnight or Noon?"

@TheRenamedException It'd probably work better too.
I'd probably just get some sort of constraint violation with my table dropping plan.

throw in an ,openid=NULL in there too, just so it forgets who everyone is and they can no longer log in :-)

Also, take all Skeet's rep while you're at it

@GeorgeMarian Yeah, originally I thought mine seemed pretty decent-sized, until I saw the size of what I was putting in it, heh. (That's it, above)
Sure as hell weighs a lot (relatively) though, like 26 lbs. or so empty.

3:52 PM
@TimStone Yah, that's huge. But, I mine's bigger. ;)
lol

@MichaelMrozek and the answer is "You should totally show up at midnight just to make sure, because so often nowadays businesses like to do training after people put their kids to bed. There's nothing like a grumpy businessman to start the morning off right!"

Dayum. Steel case?

@GeorgeMarian Hahah :P

^_^

@GeorgeMarian I'm tempted to flag this as offensive so 10ks see it in the list and wonder wtf we're talking about

3:54 PM
@MichaelMrozek lol

@GeorgeMarian hey just wanted to let you know, things are crazy over here, sorry for not getting back to you yet. May not be until later this week

@GeorgeMarian Yep, rolled steel. :D
@GeorgeMarian :o

@TheRenamedException No worries. I noticed you make a comment about that in chat after our last exchange. Thanks for the update. :)
@TimStone Yah, it's huge. Pretty nice case though. Very quiet. So quite that it makes me wonder how I ever up with my old case, which was chock full of 80 mm high output (jet engine noise level) fans.

Ah yeah, this one is pretty quite too, though if the fans on my graphics cards kick in it sounds like a jet engine too, heh.

3:57 PM
Oh look I get to reboot again :(

Hmm, I guess I actually do have enough room.
I can always move the hard disk into the lower bay if need be, I guess.

@TimStone LOL I think we may have the same CPU heatsink.

I should really upgrade the cards soon though, having to switch in and out of CrossFire is a pain in the ass, and now that we're doing this semi-regular SE gaming shindig..
Not really sure what I plan to do with the ones I have in there though, heh.

Hi! :)

@GeorgeMarian Great minds ;)

Again - we need an official ruling from the SO crew on http://discuss.area51.stackexchange.com/questions/62/cms-blog-proposals-merger (to start closing proposals in favour of it) and soon because wer gonna miss the momentum if we wait too much (as seen by the launch of wordpress answers)

@MichaelMrozek so you admit you're six then?

I admit that I would appreciate an Angry Birds birthday cake at any age

Question: how are userscripts injected into a page?
Does the browser just shove them into the header and let them run or is there more to it?

@Moshe I don't understand the question.

@drachenstern what is involved in implementing userscript support?

Have you looked at the userscripts being used for SO stuff?
I would suggest taking a peak at the github repo for the SEChatMods

A bit. But I'm asking from a browser's perspective.
As a browser how do I take a userscript and make it work?
@drachenstern: spoiler alert: the twelfth achievement is activating the cheat.
More info on that cheat upon request. Yetanotheriphoneapp@gmail
(removed)

@Moshe github.com/greasemonkey/greasemonkey/tree <-- I would suggest looking at something that does what you're asking

4:49 PM
I would like to know what changes need to be made to a browser to make it respect userscripts.
Ok thanks.
But I need to make the browser reSpect plug ins first.

@Moshe userscripts are javascripts that get injected into the page

@TheRenamedException yes, his question is more to do with how that happens

different from plugins
@drachenstern right

@TheRenamedException not if he uses something like greasemonkey in between the userscript and the browser
I have a feeling he's wanting to do something with Mobile Safari based on other comments he has made

Indeed.
@drachenstern mobile safari needs some userscript love.

4:51 PM
<script>
function inject() {
	for (var i = 0; i < arguments.length; i++) {
		if (typeof arguments[i] === 'function') {
			var script = document.createElement('script');
			script.textContent = '('+ arguments[i].toString() +')(jQuery);';

			document.body.appendChild(script);
		}
	}
}
</script>

@drachenstern greasemonkey is a browser extension for firefox, different from a plugin
@Moshe I would reccomend checking into bookmarklets, like firebug lite

@TheRenamedException I rather consider the two the same in the world of FX, is there indeed a difference?

Looking at greasemonkey now. Someone Star that code please in case I need it.

It seems unlikely that you'd be able to invoke the JavaScript engine in Mobile Safari, but I could be wrong. The rest of the work revolves around sandboxing the userscript.

@drachenstern very much so, plugins are native compiled code, extensions are javascript+css+xui packs

4:53 PM
@Moshe just install SEChatModifications and type /jot 525343

@TheRenamedException interesting
@Nyuszika7H there's no way to do that in mobile safari there my good sir

@drachenstern what about bookmarklets?

@Nyuszika7H that I do not know. I would like to. Shall you experiment for me?

@drachenstern plugin: Flash, Shockwave, QuickTime, Adobe Reader etc. | extension: Adblock Plus, NoScript, Firebug etc.
@drachenstern I can't :/ I haven't got an Apple phone.

bookmarklets should work fine

4:56 PM
@TheRenamedException yeah

I dont see why userscripts in safari mo are so hard. Correct me if I'm wrong, but can't I subclass UIWebView and inject the code in one of those methods? I need to double check the docs.

Opera Mobile 10 supports both addEventListener and attachEvent. Interesting.

So you're going to write your own browser for submission to the apple store?

@drachenstern sure. There are plenty of them already.
Why not?

@drachenstern rchern clone!!
1 hour ago, by drachenstern
@TheRenamedException Oy! You don't say! (:

4:59 PM
There are? I thought there were only twoish ~ Skyfire and Opera Mobile
@Nyuszika7H welcome to the party

The SDK contains a browser component already. They give developers thier own browser.

Yes, but they don't actively encourage writing a new one per-se

@Moshe yeah, the issue here is not that userscripts are difficult, it's that you can't modify Safari. I mean I suppose you could if you jakbroked and hacked it, but the browser itself has to support them

UIWebView meet @drachenstern. @drachenstern meet UIWebView.

I would suggest userscripts :-)

5:00 PM
(:

There are more.

@Moshe duplicating functionality of a native app is no longer subject to rejection?

is looking at the appstore now
@Moshe I was already aware of that UI element tyvm

Check out how MarkUp does it @Moshe markup.io

@loic its not duping. Hang on folks going to te app store for a sec.

5:01 PM
@LoïcWolff apparently not :\ googling

the bookmark contains a javascript which inserts a <script> onto the page. This will also work in IE
and will work without forcing people to download your custom browser

color me newly informed

Yea many results for "browser".

(sorry for typos, in car using tetherimg)

5:06 PM
So I think it is doable. No plugin or extension. I just need to make a built in injector and a script manager.
Not sure why it's so hard. Of course it is and I am talking without actually trying it.

@The I'm targeting mobile safari and mobile safari only. I want userscripts on my iPhone, Kay?

@Moshe so you need a place to store them, a way to manage them, a way to debug that your way works on the phone, some system of accounting for them working, and you need to support things like a debugger to really get devs using it. Doesn't sound too hard. We can expect a demo in what, 6-8 hours?

Heh. I hear ya. I forgot the debugger.
Assume it's like Safari, mkay?
Debug in safari.

@MichaelMrozek This isn't true

5:13 PM
@drachenstern storage isn't hard. Management is manageable. Debugging is a challenge.
Even if it's hackish. I want to try it.

Well, at least in the sense that I don't believe the two things are related. I'm pretty sure usernames are never removed from the auto-completion list if you don't refresh the page, and just because a name isn't there doesn't mean it won't be notified in the SuperCollider (though it might not be). Should probably check and answer that question..

@Moshe it will be hackish ;)
@TimStone I thought there was a two day rule on that? Or did it get changed in the interim?
Need to find someone who hasn't been to chat in two days here that we can coord with

It's not that the rule isn't there, it's just that there's a disconnect between the autocomplete and notifications.

Yeah, I knew that. I can still @someone and they'll get notified, even if it doesn't popup
*to an extent

would that work too? /me runs off to test in console
@TimStone yatta! thanks

@Moshe has an interesting strategy of starting a game, then skipping his second turn :\
14:96
meanwhile I have an interesting strategy for getting work done >.>

5:44 PM
@drachenstern I have a rotten hand. It may be a few turns before I play another move.

@Moshe so you swap tiles
three passes means I win

@drachenstern That too.
@drachenstern Oh?
Will do then.

@Moshe you can have the TW :p

@drachenstern Oh, not that. I didn't mean three passes. I meant, will swap tiles.

@Moshe no, I mean you can have the TW on the vertical upper left

5:54 PM
@drachenstern Heh, we shall see.

6:06 PM
@balpha If you have a second, which of us is correct? :P

@TimStone neither :)
but you are more correct than grace

Ah, I see. Well, I'm more concerned about giving false information than being the one who's correct, heh.

you are correct except for this part:
> Conversely, you won't see the names of people who left before you entered the room.
if one of their messages is visible, the client knows about them

Q: New Careers feature "Passive Candidate Search" - feedback wanted!

David FullertonWe're launching a new, experimental feature tomorrow on Careers, and wanted to get people's opinion on it. As always, our goal is to help awesome programmers find great jobs. However, we've found that: People don't always want to signal that they're looking for a job A lot of candidates don't...

please provide your feedbacks

@Jeff: Sounds cool... P.S. Did Robert get my email?

Oh, very cool.

Interesting.

is there a setting so that comments are always expanded?

@bentsai Hmm, I seem to remember there being a userscript that did that, though I might be imagining things.

@TimStone I think you're right. I wanted to make sure I wasn't missing a setting/way that was built-in.
