@Moshe left, and suddenly Berman isn't there for this recorded vote. I'm suspicious

Oh, they might actually be approving something.

I don't know about the representative, but I went to dinner.
Those guys got pizza. I had French Toast.
Because my mom is awesome.
Now if someone's mom raised them to be a representative, I'm not sure I can say the same.
Although I shouldn't speak too soon.

Huh, I just noticed this - the row of gravatars on the chat ad are actually a single image

Are the representatives still misrepresenting?
Or are they done for the night?

Q: What is the way to describe final exams?

MosheWhat is the way to describe final exams? If want to describe my final exams at the end of my semester at university, what's the noun for "final exams"?

(calling @balpha, @pekka)

4:07 AM
@Moshe did you google this first? did you use a translator app?

4:33 AM
@RebeccaChernoff I don't trust them. I'm looking for a colloquial translation for this:
In English, I call it "Finals".
Okay, between my English-Deutsch dictionary, which is unreliable because it uses UK English, and Google Translate, I'm settling on:
Studieren für Abschlussprüfungen.
(Studying for Finals)

4:51 AM
@Moshe is that a Moshe original?

1 hour later…
6:01 AM
@Moshe I think you'll find UK English is perfectly reliable ;p

6:29 AM
I've been on the computer more that 17 hours now. I'm not sure if I'm thinking straight or I just don't care.

5 hours later…
11:18 AM
@MarcGravell Lol, my question is more about word usage. So if I wanted to translate bathroom (washroom/loo) I'd need to know the "British" way of saying it.
@Trufa I've done three days once. I did take breaks for meals and prayers, but they were quick because I was working on a project on a tight deadline.

@Moshe the US avoidance of "toilet" always amuses me. "bathroom", "restroom" etc... what.. you're out at a restaurant and you suddenly fancy a bath? a quick nap? It is a toilet people! call it that!
</rant>

@NickT Yes it is, drew it before bed last night, right before I posted it..
@MarcGravell Truth. You're not wrong.

@MarcGravell The best instance of that issue was my host familiy's son (when I lived in the US) one day exclaiming "The dog went to the bathroom in my bedroom."

Also, I don't like the stack of books on the left side. I hated drawing the bookshelf too.
Haha, @balpha. Win!

@balpha maybe he meant the en-suite? (ducks)

11:23 AM
English is a crazy language. We should call it Americanish on this side of the ocean, since it's different enough.
Eh, maybe not.
Anyway, what do you folks think of my cartoon?

very good, but I worry you're wasting revision time with such niceties

@MarcGravell Revision time? You mean for school?
wonders if the should start doing StackExchange themed cartoons

I mean... whatever the "my final exams at the end of my semester" was about

@MarcGravell Ah, I had three of those yesterday. One on Intro to C++ next week. For all I care, I'm finished. I know how to write code. (I just need to look up the docs for substr() and find() and a few others.)
@MarcGravell Still not sure where you get the term revision time. Exactly the word usage difference I was afraid of.

cramming = revision = re-reading all the notes one took in a half-drunk, half-hungover, half-asleep and half-wondering-what-all-these-halves-add-up-to-and-whether-that-is-significant

Ah. Yup, we call it cramming.

Q: How does oneboxing work?

Octavian DamieanI'm wondering how oneboxing on chat works. Do you fetch the data from an API of a site for which oneboxing is implemented or do you scrape the content of that page and extract the desired data?

wonders if that might be a dupe
hopes not

in Chat feedback, Sep 10 '10 at 14:45, by balpha
the SE question, answer and user oneboxes just use the public SE API
I know that's only a partial answer, which is why I'm mentioning it here and not in an answer (yet).

I see, thanks. :)

I... probably should have looked immediately above and below that message; the whole answer is there. I've now posted it under your question.

3:10 PM
Now that I think about it, I can't come up with a onebox example of something that hasn't an API.
Oh, I can!
grep searches the named input FILEs (or standard input if no files are named, or if a single hyphen-minus (-) is given as file name) for lines containing a match to the given PATTERN. By default, grep prints the matching lines. In addition, three variant programs egrep, fgrep and rgrep are available. egrep is the same as grep -E. fgrep is the same as grep -F. rgrep is the same as grep -r. Direct invocation as either egrep or fgrep is deprecated, but is provided to allow historical applications that rely on them to run unmodified.

Ubuntu man pages onebox here? Hmmm...

@OctavianDamiean I think Area 51 proposals are special-cased to use the RSS feed on the page, because Area 51 doesn't (didn't?) have an API, but I might be wrong.

Yay, I got the "Convention" badge!

Q: Pre-defining tabular structures in MediaWiki

PekkaI have installed a fresh MediaWiki. I want to fill it with articles that will contain free text, and tabular information in the right hand column, like Wikipedia does: I want to pre-define templates for this information, and I'm a little lost on how and where to get started. I know how to crea...

@ThePGRepMiningCo I did one of those once upon a time, but I really don't remember that much now, I'll take a look!
@ThePGRepMiningCo is this what you need?
Ahh no, I see what you mean.

5:04 PM
@Trufa yeah :) This is more complex somehow. I've never quite managed to figure out how to do this but now I need it. A Mediawiki expert will probably know straight away - maybe I have to check out their forums.

@ThePGRepMiningCo bu do you want the infoboxes on the side?

@Trufa yup, preferably exactly the way Wikipedia does it.

@ThePGRepMiningCo ohh that's easy.

@Trufa I know what you mean, but it's coupled with having parameters
I think the way WP does it is, they have templates with tabular data with parameters, adn then in the actual article, you just give the parameters
Like in the "view source" view of the article on Germany: en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Germany&action=edit
I'll dig some more later. I have to run now, take care @Trufa and talk to you later!

@ThePGRepMiningCo See you later but I think it is an infobox you want!

5:10 PM
OY.
Ever had one of those days where production breaks, and you fix it, but you make the fix on the wrong branch, and it takes you an hour to figure out why production is still broken?

Why did you delete it?
It was a real question...
It's a real bug
can you please post it

@TinymooTim =(

@Fezziwig ?

@ any mods or people who just want to gawk: the new answer to the "What Experts Exchange thinks of SO" question contains some... questionable... content.
It is SFW, just kinda vitriolic.

@PopularDemand Link for the lazy?

@PopularDemand That's some juicy stuff.

I'm working on a userscript that pulls information from the json/jsonp api (if that is what you call it)

Nice.

and i keep getting blocked because of 'too many requests from this ip'
my script runs two ajax (jsonp) requests (each time you reload an option, or every two minutes)

Are you passing in an API key?

7:25 PM
jQuery generated one yes..
it works for a bit - and i am testing so i'm clicking around alot (loading different options and sending more requests)
i'm wondering if anyone knows how finicky that spam detector (if thats what you call it) is?
should the users of my script be worried about this happening to them?

jQuery generated one? If you haven't registered for an API key, the Stack Exchange API will limit you to 300 requests per site per day. If you're hitting the servers in general too frequently, it might be HAProxy blocking you instead.
But I don't know the specific details of how the latter works.

well i was 503 in the console.. when i went to visit meta i got the 'too many ip reqests' warning on the page.

Ah, yeah, then it was HAProxy's rate limiting.

7:59 PM
I don't get today's xkcd.com comic. Is it just me?

@jadarnel27 They're in line for the 3D re-release, but they're the only ones

@Fezziwig No, pretty sure they're in line for Episode II.

@Fezziwig Oh. Thanks! I'm glad I know now. Although that does not make this comic any funnier =)

@PopularDemand But Episode II isn't "The Phantom Menace"?
Or did I miss some sarcasm?

@PopularDemand I am now

8:06 PM
I wasn't sure there was a 3D re-release, and it's really not funny anyway.
As in, theaters are not disguised, nor are movie launches.

They've clearly been there for a while.

they wouldn't surprise launch a movie like they do mobile phones. they tend to want everyone to know the date/time so they get their box office numbers.

@PopularDemand should I return to lurking or did you remember?

@jcolebrand Was just wondering if you knew of a good intro resource for PL/SQL, because Googling brings up an array of disappointing "plsqltutorial.com"-esque content farms.

@PopularDemand hmmm, I don't particularly personally, because I've never cared for Ora and that would be a requisite requirement (caring about Ora -> knowing PL/SQL -> knowing good tutorials) ... HOWEVER, what I can do is point you to some really smart Ora people and you can see what they know, if that would help.

8:09 PM
Meh, that seems like too much effort, but thanks.

lol, I meant, on chat.se

Anyways, the joke is that some people camp out for movies so early that it would be normal for nobody else around them to be interested in (or even aware of) the movie they're waiting for.
Well, now that you've gone to all that trouble....

Just ordered cards from The Oatmeal.... man, if they don't show up for christmas, I'm sending him a package full of soggy oatmeal.

Q: Merge [code-first], [codefirst] into [ef-code-first]

abatishchevI think most of the questions tagged with code-first or codefirst, especially which are also tagged with any of .NET tags (.net, c#, vb.net, etc.) are regarding Entity Framework Code First, so ef-code-first is the most suitable tag for them.

@abatishchev What about all the people that literally want to code before doing anything else?
=)
(see what I did there? Code first?)

crickets

Hahahaha, yes. This is why I'm a programmer and not a comedian.

lol

Wow...

@PopularDemand On SO it would've been accepted

@Trufa that looks like the keyword I've been looking for, thanks! :)

@Fezziwig Really?
@PopularDemand I love the edit summary:
"made explianation"

9:10 PM
Hi everyone, nice christmas bling that you all've got on!
I have to run. See you later everybody!

@Chris I see the stupidest things accepted on SO. There was just one in the last week where somebody added random characters to the end of the post, and it got accepted

^ WTMF @reno and @abatishchev |:

ah hahahaha Reno

That's weird

@TimStone M?

9:13 PM
M = Mother. In terms of severity, it goes WTF, WTMF, and then WTFF.

Is there an incentive to accept suggested edits like that?

Indeed. Also, this (apparently)

Ah, right. Clever up arrow there.

I can't take credit, I was inspired by someone from Gaming's chat.
@Chris I think there's some form of reviewer badge or something now...
Ah, only a bronze though
And it goes both ways, approvals + rejections

That's what she said?

9:24 PM
@TimStone That actually appears to be a silver badge

The /review badge is silver, but the suggested edits badge is bronze no?
@jadarnel27 I have a feeling rejection was part of what she said, yes. :P

@TimStone Oh, right.

Aye
I guess I could have been more specific, my bad. :P

Eh
I can't keep track of all the new badges :)
Although since you can either approve or reject edits to get the Proofreader badge, I don't understand why people would lower their standards and let garbage through

I assume it's unrelated to the badge. I don't understand it, though.

9:28 PM
Such as the one you pointed out
15 mins ago, by Fezziwig
On a slightly unrelated note, I noticed an odd -5 rep on Meta today
even though my reputation tab doesn't show any record of it
i.e. the "-5" showed up in the title of the tab, but when I clicked it I didn't see a corresponding entry in my activity
So. . .I did a reputation recalc just to make sure everything was kosher
I still found the whole thing to be strange, though

I've seen two or three posts this week that end with "Greetings!" Is this a new thing, or just a coincidence?

9:47 PM
@PopularDemand Maybe it's a holiday thing =)

What happens if I try to copy a VM into itself?

@TinymooTim I'm going to guess "an explosion".

That or nothing, I suppose.
The windows file locking Nasi has detected that file is open for writing!

That's certainly a more likely alternative.

10:14 PM
D: how did that happen

What are you asking us for?

Sorry I was not asking you? That was more of a I'm confused myself expression.

@Reno Sorry, I thought you were replying to this:

I'll be more careful, but I really can't believe I approved that. No more late night reviews then.

@PopularDemand If you're feeling adventurous since I'm a bit busy, that post you just edited is already implemented (if I read it right) and is also a duplicate.

@TimStone This one?

Q: Please let me ignore tags by hovering over them and clicking "ignore"

mslotI have a lot of tags in my ignore list, and I mean a lot. It would be cool if I were able to simply click on a tag to ignore it, or maybe use a drag'n'drop action, moving the tag I want to ignore over the ignore list. I use the ignore list for tags that I do not know anything about and tags that...

Yeah. There's a post that talks about the star being tri-state that covers the favourite and ignore cases.

Drag-and-drop isn't implemented though.

I don't think the OP asked for that, though

True, but they only asked for that in lieu of an option in the drop down it looks like, so I figure in spirit the request is covered.

10:47 PM
Yeah, come to think of it, clicking on the star icon to ignore a post isn't very intuitive

It should turn into a middle finger when you hover over it.

:D

The Stack Exchange interface doesn't have nearly enough middle fingers in it
