@Benjol eh, I have a thesis to finish, an Erasmus to apply to, an exam to prepare... and everything else.
so yes, my desktop does have a few things going on right now :P
stupid, stupid, stupid mid-degree thesis
we're the last year that has to do one T_T

@badp, Italy is kind of .. renowned .. for never-ending higher education :)

@Benjol of all things we're renown for, I wasn't aware of this one

From what I've heard Uni.DateLeave - Uni.DateStart is not clearly defined at Uni.DateStart :)

I only know italy for its cuisine, usage of a lot of hand guestures and loud mouth thingy

@Benjol Well, you can choose to have a 3 years' degree, a 5 years' degree, a 5 years' degree followed by a PhD
just, you're not forced to keep up the pace.

10:05 AM
finché papà possono pagare :)

@Benjol *può

sorry, I had to get google translate's help for that :) I can do Italian->English mostly on my own, but not the other way...

I consider not having to make a loan to pay my studies a plus :)

il mio asino è guasto
totally dead

@badp, I managed to scrape through on parents/grants/working in the summer/living like a pauper... :)

Q: “member for” is a negative number on Data.SE

Nyuszika7HI've recently joined Data.SE, and seen this: -55, -54, and counting… it reached 0, but then it started over from -59! It seems I'm not alone with this problem.

@badp bad :P

@Nyuszika7H I see what you did there

@badp Huh?

@Nyuszika7H I see you don't see what you did there

@badp Where?
> Participants Nyuszika7H 66% | Jason Plank 33%
And where's the remaining 1%? :P

@YiJiang You know what's the last thing your page needs? A COUNTDOWN.

Q: Slow Website: Why does my Loading Waterfall Image look NOT like a Waterfall at all?

SamHi folks. Looking at the waterfall analysis of my website (till my imagination slowly started to see a real waterfall in a green moist jungle) wondering why the waterfall doesn't flow more vertically? The images are very consistent: same result every time! What could be the factor of the slowin...

> Also, waterfall has been largely discredited these days, you should be using "loading agiles" ;-)

@DanGrossman, no meta account, and he already knows about freehand circles! :)

Is it wrong that languages I list on my resume are also on my ignored tags list on SO?

@Nyuszika7H Apparently you're not all there :)
@DanGrossman No, it means that the questions are so trivial that they bore you :)

10:26 AM
theyre mostly languages I don't enjoy using, though I would if I had to and have in the past

Shouldn't be my profile the same on all SE sites?

Mine's not

Oh, I see. I have to copy my profile (accounts tab). :)

I think it copies your details when you first sign in to a new site with an existing identity, but it doesnt migrate future changes from other sites

@DanGrossman I've just pressed that button on MSO, and got the StackFlair on other sites, too.

10:31 AM

haha whoa

Grrr
I tried to add a second OpenID to my account, and it created a second account instead. I didn't log out, I clicked "Add OpenID" from my profile, then clicked on the provider. I was then logged in to a new 1 rep profile instead of my existing one...

10:45 AM
Flag a post for moderator attention and get the accounts merged

I wonder if this is deliberate:

A: Why is the title included in the URL of questions?

Filip EkbergBecause of Search Enginge Optimization, you can read a bit more about it in Googles Search Enginge Optimization Guidelines

@DanGrossman just fire off an email to the team with both your user IDs

the misspelling :)
esp cuz it's repeated, twice

@DanGrossman So you're already getting your sockpuppet ready for rep harvesting :)

@Tshepang He misspelled it in comments as well, I think he believes that's the correct spelling

10:48 AM
and no one corrected
maybe it's kept for humorous value?

Now I'm upset at Google as I think about the MESS of Google Accounts I have
half of which I never wanted, but Google created for me out of old single service accounts
and all the gmail accounts it forced me to create to go with the Google Accounts where I brought my own email

I like the guy's profile image:

heh, do you have to use gravatar for avatars? I'd prefer to have a single picture on my own site

@tombull89 Gravatar also works on blogs and a number of other places.
...but yes, you have to use it.

@tombull89 u can use any image u want

10:55 AM
I know I can use any image, it's just that it has to be hosted on gravatar

Jin
morning

oh, sorry
@Jin wsup

not to worry
ah I can use my wordpress login I suppose, prevents me having to create another account

@Jin mornin'

@Jin, nice job on apple, what's next on the list? :)

11:05 AM
Stupid network administrators.

Jin
@Benjol not sure yet. this apple design has made my life very painful..
if i can travel back in time to last week, i'd choke my younger self.

@Jin, btw, did you know you have your own tag on se? stackexchange.com/tagsets/3273/jin

Why did they have to clamp connectivity to 64 kB/s? WHY?

Jin
@Benjol i feel so special! i'm glad that i'm a "featured user" on that page

It's the only way we've got of 'spying' on you :)

Jin
11:07 AM
sigh just realized i can't do css transition if i'm using sprite..
wasted 20mins debugging it

it's basically the same :)
I am disappointed by the scarcity of spiked wheels

@badp it's a little *too*fast

@Jin, I've said it already eslewhere, but the weekly photo on photo.se really is a killer feature.

Jin
@Benjol i'm glad it worked out.

I hope the community can keep submitting photos too

Jin
11:15 AM
some people didn't like the photo.se design when it was first released, but i think they like it now, or at least got used to it.

The SE #genuine bit being hardly visible is the only fault I can find currently

Jin
this Apple css conversion is probably the most tedious theme i've done. photo.se was pretty bad, not nowhere nearly as bad as Apple.

Sure, there was a problem with the ask question link but it's now well improved
@Jin As W3Schools says, real men use Dreamweaver and pals! Why do you keep doing it wrong!

Jin
actually, i am using Dreamweaver..
the code mode of course.
can you find me a user that's been deleted on SO?

11:32 AM
@Jin er, you're the mod here
look for migrated questions maybe

11:45 AM
@Jin, will a non-existent user do for you?
Based on SEDE, ids 6, 7, 12, 14, 18, 21 are missing. Take your pick :)

Jin
i just need to play with the deleted user css class

Anyone know if accents are stripped before matching usernames in comments?
Hi @Pekka

Hi @Benjol
Not sure about the accents.

I like what you're doing with your bounty by the way, going out blazing with some good, constructive ideas.

12:06 PM
@Benjol They are, yes
The accents are folded

@YiJiang, thanks
in doubt I did both :)

This is... very weird.

Q: jQuery tipsy plugin - DelayIn not working

Matt WizI just added jquery tipsy plug-in to my site and I cant seem to get it working properly! It fades in just fine and the html works fine, but the delay doesn't happen. Here is the code I am using: $(document).ready(function() { $('#navi li a').tipsy({delayIn: 500, fade: true, html: true}); }) ...

Ah, of course - a mod moved the comments to the question when deleted the answer

Jin
@YiJiang have you used css3 transition much?

@Jin Not much, unfortunately - I used Firefox 3.6 as my primary browser and it doesn't support those yet
And the syntax difference between the two implementation makes me slightly wary
The whole thing doesn't seem finalized at all

Jin
i'm having a hard time achieving the effect i want.
i just don't think it's possible when my button states graphics are all on the same image sprite

12:13 PM
I usually just use JavaScript - animation is dangerously close to behaviors

Jin
in this case the effect i want to is a fade in 'n out, no moving

@Jin Ask a question on SO? :)

Jin
but since they're all on the same sprite, i get this moving effect since it transitions the background-position..
SO? I heard that site before..
i heard they may catch up to Quora one day

@Jin Why not just use opacity?

Jin
i tried, but didn't work
i tried all, opacity etc.
sprite for Apple.se

12:15 PM
You want the two button states to transition?

Jin
for voting arrow and fav star, the 2nd col is the hover state. i'd like it to phase in(opacity) when you hover over it

Well that isn't really going to happen unless you overlay the buttons over each other, than fade one in to cover the other on hover
But that's going to require changes to the HTML structure, so...

Jin
OR it can work if i make each state its own separate image
bah i'm not gonna bother for now. too much other stuff to do...
but thanks anyway!

@YiJiang, could you give me a tip on how I can use jquery to sort by up/down ratio, please?

@Benjol From where?

12:23 PM
your page
firebug

$('.score').map(function(){
    return +$.trim(this.title.split(':')[1]);
}).get();

hm, that's a start...

That'll give you an array to play around with
You can sort, join or filter it any way you want :)

Q: New Stack Exchange Search, Try it out!

Nick CraverFor a few reasons, we recently changed the guts of how search works on our sites. If you keep up, you've probably read somewhere that we were using SQL Server Full Text Search. There are a few areas that utilize search that all got a replacement tonight: Search itself (box in the upper right)...

live network wide, please send us your complaints, I mean, feedback

@JeffAtwood, no complaints so far, f#/F# works, and that was my main gripe :)
"the center cannot hold" works too, but I don't know if I tried that before :)
@YiJiang, got this far, but it's returning a value instead of doing something, please excuse my ignorance :(
$('#userList > li').sortElements(function (a, b) {
  return $(b).find('.score').map( function()
    {
       return +$.trim(this.title.split(':')[1]);
    }) -
      $(a).find('.score').map( function()
    {
       return +$.trim(this.title.split(':')[1]);
    })
  });

12:35 PM
Moin

searches for myself :)

Oh interface is pink :-)

@Benjol Ah, no. You're suppose to return a value, > 0 for a < b, 0 for a = b and < 0 for a > b

@JeffAtwood I had a case yesterday where it returned the same question three times in the "related" sidebar. This was on MSO, but I haven't been able to repeat it. If I spot it again I'll post on that question

@YiJiang Isn't that what it's doing?

12:38 PM
@Benjol No, that returns an array, here, lemme get you the correct code
$('#userList > li').sortElements(function (a, b) {
    return $(b).find('.score').attr('title').split(':')[1] - $(a).find('.score').attr('title').split(':')[1];
});

all right well do give it a workout.. I look forward to making Nick the search punching bag for "it ain't as good as Google" instead of me from this point onward :)
3

There's only a single .score element in each li element, so you're returning a single element array
The whole exercise with .map is unnecessary if all you need is a single value :)

@YiJiang, ok, I'll keep trying :)
@YiJiang, thanks, I like that order better, and I suspect it's closer to the end result

@Jin I'm sorry, I'm just a simpleton

@Benjol If you look into the elections page's js source (I won't recommend it since the code is a mess) around line 108 there's a switch with a list of sorting functions, you can look at those as examples

12:47 PM
@YiJiang, I'd got that far, it was injecting that into the page, and extracting the ratios, which I was having trouble with. Thanks.
Anyway, in that order, @MichaelMrozek comes out second :)

Hi! :)

I kinda want to chime in on Will's question, but that'd ruin my reply

you need approval for edits ?

@Reno Suggested edits for anon and > 2k users

1:01 PM
ah i see
so you get reps for that .. gosh im such a noob

@Reno I'm not sure if that feature kicked in yet

@YiJiang, it kicks in and out :)

Anyone can edit anything now, but users with 2k+ rep need to approve those edits.

mendokuse

@YiJiang, look at the 5th view on that edit :)

1:04 PM
@badp Oh, that question is hilarious

@waffles appears to be rendering the html code

@Benjol Yup, possible XSS attack vector, sigh

It's probably not what Jin wants (I can't understand what's the problem tbh), but this does add some bling to Meta. It's almost like the sprites were arranged just for this purpose:
.vote-up-off,
.vote-up-on,
.vote-down-off,
.vote-down-on,
.star-on,
.star-off {
  -webkit-transition: 0.5s;
}

.vote-up-off,
.vote-down-off,
.star-off {
  opacity: .3;
}

.vote-up-on,
.vote-down-on,
.star-on {
  opacity: .6;
}

.vote-up-off:hover,
.vote-up-on:hover,
.vote-down-off:hover,
.vote-down-on:hover,
.star-on:hover,
.star-off:hover {
  opacity: 1;
}

Why can't people just sanitize their HTML inputs!!?

same reason they leave the toilet seat up ?

1:09 PM
@badp 'scuse my ignorance (again), but how do you inject that stuff in chrome?

@Benjol I'm using Personalized Web for that

There's also Stylish

I'm using ^http://.*\.stackoverflow\.com|^http://.*\.stackexchange\.com as a URL match

You don't worry about the "can access your data on all websites" bit?

@Benjol That's the point. It needs access to pages before it can touch them.

1:12 PM
@badp, but doesn't that mean it can access cookies and storage and beam them up to somewhere else?

@Benjol I don't think the privacy settings are fine grained enough, and even then it'd request access to everything anyway given that it can inject all of HTML, JS and CSS
That extension is basically greasemonkey, just I don't have to mess with JS if all I want is add some CSS rules.

ok, so Personalized web is stylish+js+html?
@Nyuszika7H Do you mind if I reject it? I just want to experiment to see if it requires one or two rejects. - copy it somewhere first, just in case....

@Benjol no, I don't mind, try it :)

@Benjol and an ad blocker. Basically, a kitchen sink.

@Nyuszika7H, weird, it worked. So it seems that it takes 2 to accept, but only 1 to reject, and on top of that, my reject seems to have topped the already-existing accept
@Nyu Besides that, you've found an interesting edge case, because if you comment on your edit, and then your edit gets zapped, it looks a bit funny :)
Try to edit again...
@badp Ok, tried it. Nice bling ;)

1:25 PM
oooooooooooooooooooh
$(document).load(function() {
now please approve it, don't experiment with rejecting

Meta's just gone "offline for maintenance"

@ChrisF I see…

Back now

@ChrisF yep

we build occasionally; it doesn't take long

1:34 PM
I wish my builds were that quick.

@MarcGravell you broke the build!!!!!!!

that is just the deploy - we obviously do the build without taking the site down

(that, or Gaming seems down for me)

Q: Is there anything I can do to attract spiders in Minecraft?

ChrisFI really need to kill some spiders so I can make a bow and fishing rod, but there are no spiders to be seen in my vicinity. Is there a technique I can use to either attract them to a known location or discover where they are? I'm playing on easy/normal so the mobs do spawn - I've seen creepers ...

1:35 PM
just count to 10 and hit f5

@badp Cool

@MarcGravell 10 seconds have passed and that page still doesn't load :)

loaded for me

Now it loaded too

@Nyuszika7H, can you see this page: stackoverflow.com/edit-suggestions/723

1:37 PM
fixed

@ChrisF 3rd Nice Question badge

10 messages moved to Sandbox

@MarcGravell sorry
@Benjol Yes, I can see it, but can't approve my edits – neither others, because I don't have 2k rep.

@Benjol Nice! Now I can just step through with the numeric IDs :)

@Nyuszika7H, could you see the diff views and everything? or just blank page?

1:39 PM
@Benjol I can see them.

@badp, yeah, didn't think of that :)

waiting on 726 now.

@Nyuszika7H, ok, well I thought I accepted it, but it doesn't look very accepted...
@balpha, can you see the history of edit 723? I thought I approved it, but it looks like someone got there before me and rejected it - is that the case?

@Benjol 2 approves are needed to actually approve it

@Nyuszika7H, yeah, I know, but right now I can edit it, so it's not pending anymore. I guess the author could have rejected too

1:44 PM
the OP edited their post, I think that's an automatic reject
(you'll have to ask @waffles to be sure)

ok

I haven't seen the new Edit approval yet.

@Nyuszika7H, sorry :)

As a 10Ker, do my edits go through that?

@GeorgeStocker, no
6
Q: How does peer review for edits work?

Simon BrownI recently noticed a new feature on StackOverflow. Is there a specific rep threshold to be able to edit without automatic approval? How can I see a list of unapproved edits on sites in which I have enough rep to edit?

no threshold to edit. 2 x >1ks to approve
rep for edits until you get to 1k
anonymous can't edit 'new' posts

1:46 PM
This scrolling problem in Chrome 10 sucks ass!
I have to rollback to 9
And it's your fault!
Grumble grumble

@GeorgeStocker I just committed an edit with 2k rep :)

@YiJiang it's @balpha's fault! I knew it. Damn Berliners

@Pekka wat?

I saw "It's Aiden Bell's fault"

I'm not having particular trouble with 10.0.650.0

@badp ah, I think I'm on 641
I will update.

650 is a nightly
(the latest is 651 and I'm updating to that one)
The dev channel does have 648.6 however
so update away!

@balpha hah, I got you twice in a row!

10.0.648.6 dev

1:50 PM

Just updated.... Let's see
No, it's still there. That is weird!
But it must be something local if no one else has the problem. I'm mystified
It jumps to the top and scrolls to the bottom every time I post a message

@Pekka I actually had that problem with the older version.

@Nyuszika7H weird

Well, it's still the dev version so this may not get fixed. I may roll back to 9

@Benjol I'm sorry, the URL match should've been ^http://.*\.?stackoverflow\.com|^http://.*\.stackexchange\.com

I just dont like the part where i have to refactor that shit i wrote when i was drunk... while having a hangover

1:56 PM
@badp ok, now let's see if we can get that star to spin when you click on it ;)

@Benjol but, but, it moves already!
(I mean, spinning shouldn't be too hard...)

So it does, I never noticed! (Oh, that's part of the bling... goes back to look at css again

@badp transform: rotate (xdeg)
But that's really blingy, isn't it?

@YiJiang I know, but then it combines with the moving
...and when it does it's like super bling.
(First some slow motion goodness)

@badp Ahahahahaha
That is very blingy

2:02 PM
@badp, SERIOUS BLING! I want it now! :)

.star-on {
  -webkit-transform: rotate(720deg);
}
(or -mozilla-transform)
I wonder if I can drop those vendor prefixes

@badp Definitely not, the transform property is still very much in the air right now

needs slowing down a bit though...

@Benjol Rather, it needs to rotate so fast it seems it's rotating slowly the other way round!

.star-on {
  -webkit-transition: 1.5s;
  -webkit-transform: rotate(720deg);
}

2:06 PM
that is some sewious bling bling

@badp Does Webkit transitions have easing?

@RebeccaChernoff, I may need to borrow some of your hatred for WebSense :P

@YiJiang -webkit-transition-timing-function?

@badp "Your search - -webkit-transition-timing-function - did not match any documents. " That's odd...

2:11 PM
company is not able to access link (project site) because company blocks this URL, it is in category Malicious Web Site. The message on our security device WebSense is: "Malicious Web Sites. Sites in this category may pose a security threat to network resources or private information, and are blocked by your organization. Security risk blocked for your protection"

@YiJiang All I know is that property autocompletes in the CSS pane of the Chrome inspector
Still google knows nothing about it indeed

@badp Seems to be undocumented

Hmm... unsupported...

Did you try searching without the leading hyphen?

@JasonPlank whoops :D

2:14 PM
Suggested edits REALLY REALLY needs a 'how to edit': starting with "nuke hi/thanks as a matter of course"

@badp Ahahaha, yeah, how'd we forget about that? :P
webkit.org/blog/138/css-animation covers it, though it's from 2007, so things might have changed
"I believe that TMTOWTDI is dangerous, and, not only that, it yields ugly code." - stackoverflow.com/questions/4811611/…

Does the "notify me daily of new answers" also work when (only) a comment is placed under the question?

@Jan, by email you mean?

@JanFabry Don't think so, no

2:29 PM
@Benjol Yes, by email

What Yi said, then.

@YiJiang Too bad, I think we loose new users that way on the WordPress SE (and other sites probably)
Because the usual response to an incomplete question is to give a comment, asking for more information

bah, I can't get -webkit-box-reflect to do anything

But if the user is used to a "classic" forum, they expect to be notified of anything, and then never hear from the site again

Hmmm... neither does the RSS feed.
@JanFabry You can drop a [feature-request], but I'm not sure how far it would go

2:32 PM
@YiJiang I tried searching for an existing one, but I could not find any - but my meta-search-fu is not that great

The Meta search engine is updated with a new version that's supposedly better, so hrm...

@RebeccaChernoff What version of Chrome are you using?

@YiJiang, network wide.

@RebeccaChernoff Ah, right, they rolled it out earlier today

@TimStone 10.0.642.2, there's a pending update

2:34 PM
@RebeccaChernoff For the love of god do not update

I think it just totally broke chat (somehow)
Hopefully it's just some random issue, but I'd suggest not updating until I can make sure that's true, heh.

@Nyuszika7H nice try

@TimStone I don't know why you guys would use the dev version and not expect it break random sites :P

@YiJiang It's normally well behaved. :P

@balpha I think it'd be a better try to link to the reputation page with ?recalc=true
brb disabling images

that's XSRF protected as well

Ah ha, it's getting angry with jQuery :o

2:38 PM
how so?

Oh, sorry, it's actually getting angry with livequery, so it's our bad somehow. :P
Let's see, does this work?
Hooray! \o/

meh, embed it. silly to have the external dependency.
what'd you do?

oh, I see, the XSRF protection is server side

I just disabled the userscript for the moment to make sure that was all it was.

doesn't consider that a fix (;

2:41 PM
@RebeccaChernoff That's the next step ;)

@TimStone That's never an option, I mean, how does chat work without the userscript!!? It doesn't even function, doesn't it?

@YiJiang The lack of timestamps makes me afraid.
It seems to think that $.livequery is undefined here:
// Request a run of the Live Queries
$.livequery.run();
