@RebeccaChernoff BUR-NI-NATE

Oh, now that's a new error. The database could not be exclusively locked to perform the operation.
Um, why does my message show after your reply? |:

He edited after the fact? :P

Oy.

Also, someone needs to reset @badp

9:05 PM
@RebeccaChernoff Demand exclusivity! Also, why does it have to obtain a lock to compare? >_>

err, the compare worked, but I'm trying to write the updates to the target server (:

Oh, that makes more sense.

My boss keeps reporting to me that he sees a certain bug in the 2.0b6 version of our product... I cannot reproduce it. But he keeps calling me into my office, pointing at his screen and saying "Josh, look it's broken!" and sure enough, it is! But I cannot reproduce on my own for the life of me! >:o

Want us to take wild guesses at what the problem is?

Sure! XD

9:10 PM
He's not keeping track of what steps he takes when it comes up either? tsk :P

No, he is...
But those steps don't reproduce the problem for me

Oh, it's an ellusive bug.

So, @YiJiang, add Programmers to your comparer :)

Yeah -- when I'm not around it shows up XD

Even more fun! What's the problem? :/

9:11 PM
Flash text Box appears empty instead of containg the text it's supposed to contain

@Pollyanna The important thing is that you tried.

@Josh is your boss' name Bobby Tables by any chance?

You have my sympathy, at any rate.

@balpha if only!

@Josh Same Flash version and everything?

9:12 PM
This time it was actually empty, I queried it with JavaScript and sure enough the HTML inside was ""
@TimStone Yup
It must be a timing issue, I'm thinking

Hmm

lol

We send the initial HTML to Flash using JavaScript, so, something must be interfering. I'm going to enable more logging and try again

just after HTML 5 got its shield with a large and proud 5 and everything, HTML 5 will no longer carry a version number

Yeah, I think they actually mentioned that a long time ago but no one paid attention then :P

9:15 PM
LOL

@Josh Ah ha :)

It just frustrates me to no end, LOL

It's a JavaScript debugging adventure!

LOL

> You are in a maze of anonymous functions, all alike. Closures are west and east. You see here: $

ROFLMAO
east
> You are eaten by a GNU

lol

damn I forgot to take $!
Nothing fends off a GNU like a little jQuery

> You enter a closure inside a setInterval that updates the site's snowflakes every 100 milliseconds. You are doomed to annoy users to no end eating their CPU forever, until August rolls around and the site admin wakes up and removes your function.
> You die...

@PopularDemand Do, or do not. There is no try.

Damn I'm 0 for 2!

9:22 PM
Also the reason why Mr. Miyagi hates exceptions.

@Pollyanna Gotta catch 'em all.

That was a bracing pun.

</old-unfunny-trite-overused-joke-of-the-day>

very nice

9:26 PM
Heh. Shabbat shalom folks. I'm out.

Shabat Shalom @Moshe, take care!

@josh Re: seriously gross: You have no idea.

Peac out

@Pollyanna No, I don't. I did once take a giant bite out of... something, I was trying to remember as you were telling your story, but I have forgotten it, but anyway grabbed whatever it was from the fridge and took a giant bite without rally looking, and only while chewing did I see the piece still in my hand was covered in mold...
So I can kinda relate, but, a few (more) beers later and the taste had vanished...

@Josh That is also pretty nasty :P

9:29 PM
@Josh - ew. Yeah, moldy food has a particularly distasteful flavor.

Might have been cheese, I don't remember. It was gross, I remember that much, but not as gross as mistaking congealed bacon grease for mashed potatoes
@TimStone the friends I had over at the time thought it was funny as hell :-D

I have eaten small bits of mold previously due to poor attention on my part, and I can say with some certainty that bacon grease is about a million times worse.

I have no experience to back it up but I would still agree with you @Pollyanna
Also, I think I'm going to skip dinner tonight...

I am finally back at the point where I can eat bacon without grimacing though, so it's not a permanent condition.

AH HA!!!!! I HAVE RECREATED THE PROBLEM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

9:32 PM
@Josh That seems like a terrible option
\o/

FINALLY!

You forgot to import jQuery at the top of your SQL, didn't you?
$("users id").join("badges id").filter(function() { return this.badgeName == "jQuery" })
so much better!
(actually I wouldn't mind that. Honestly.)

@josh WOOOOOO!
Alright, I'm turning in my geek card. Miyagi said, "Either you karate do "yes", or karate do "no". You karate do "guess so", (makes squish gesture) just like grape. Understand? " whereas it was yoda that said the much more memorable, "Do or do not, there is no try."
@badp [status-NO-JQUERY-FOR-YOU]
aw, it doesn't like my status.

It actually doesn't like @badp

@Pollyanna I reject your reality and replace it with my jQuery.

9:38 PM
@Pollyanna I was trying to remember where he said "Do or do not, there is no try" but I didn't realize it was actually Yoda who said that, so -1 for me also. Now, of course, it seems obvious as all getout.

@badp Thank you for your msg of January 21st. After careful consideration, I regret to inform you that I am unable to accept your rejection of my reality.
This year I have been particularly fortunate in receiving an unusally large number of rejections of my reality. With such a varied and promising field of candidates, it is impossible for me to accept all rejections.

@Pollyanna Thank you for your expeditious reply. After careful reading, I confidently say that we'll agree to disagree. Please continue enjoying your jQueryless reality. $.salutations($("#Pollyanna").locale())

Despites badp's outstanding qualifications and previous experience in rejecting other's realities, I find that your rejection does not meet my needs at this time. Therefore my reality will be resuming its position in your life shortly.
Best of luck in rejecting future realities.

Ah ha, @TimStone it is a timing issue!

What happened?

9:43 PM
Sometimes the Flash fails to load, inexplicably. I can detect when this happens because the ExternalInterface is not available

Dear Pollyanna, thank you for your caring reply. I assure you I hold your reality in the highest of consideration. Right next to mine. jQueryically yours.

I have code which tests if the ExternalInterface is available and if not, logs and error, causes the Flash to be reloaded and throws an exception

BUT, there is a second function called via setTimeout which still runs regardless
so I need to move the check for the ExternalInterface a few lines earlier

Ahh

9:44 PM
@Josh Interesting!

@Pollyanna Well done, sir.

@Pollyanna yeah... we'll see, I could be incorrect here, but if the code doesn't lie then I think that's the issue
I am not a fan of Flash but in this application it's a necessary evil

@Josh Check once only, you should. Race condition, you should avoid.

LOL
er, OLL
OK here goes nothing...
problem is I have to reload about 10,000 times to see if I can even recreate it
AH HA, I think that did it
Flash failed to load, reset was successful
dances

10:04 PM
\o/

Maybe with this fixed and another developer telling my boss that our product looks really well built and is joyous to use, I can quite early today!
hm
I hate it when I speak too soon

Whoops :P

...I didn't recreate the problem, but I did just recreate the log message which led me to believe it was a timing issue...
so I A) didn't fix the timing issue and B) maybe just haven't reloaded enough times to have recreated the problem...
eh, screw it, my boss can click reload 10000 times, he seems to be able to reproduce it 100% of the time when I'm not in the room anyway!

That's right! Try something, and have the customer bug test it for you!

Yeah! What are customers good for besides just acting as paying QA people? :-D

10:10 PM
Darn straight! They should be thankful we're saving them money by not spending expensive developer time on silly tasks like testing.
2

hahaha

10:27 PM
Hey @drachenstern feeling any better?
Ah ha, ok, maybe I found another issue...

Yes and no

@drachenstern :-/

CT is done, waiting on a doc to read it

CT as in CT scan??

Have had my bowel obstruction clear itself. Repeatedly. As tho I were surviving a night of bad Mexican.
Jup, computed tomography

10:32 PM
Wow, more serious than I thought! :-(

May have a GI bleed. Doc wrote STAT on every piece of paper. They're moving pretty quick overall.

Yikes :-(

Yeah I think my wife is more worried cos she's in Michigan

You have people with you? Friends, family, support of some kind I hope?
@drachenstern Oh, no...

Oh well sure around, they're nit here right now but they're like ten fifteen away. I've got a good core group here ;)

10:34 PM
Good

I'm fine, for now. Just waiting.
A lot of the pain has gone right now. Waiting till I eat again to see if it comes back.

hang in there! I really hope everything works out!

NPO for about 27 hours now :/

@drachenstern this must be a big relief!

Oh yeah, hanging tight
A big relief will be after the CT doc says "you're healthy as an ox" ;)
Debating getting out my laptop or staying iOS

10:36 PM
@drachenstern Stay on the iOS. It'll last longer.
@drachenstern Also, try not to break your body so much.

Have cords for both. Actually just had to plug in the phone, at 15% now
Lol, I know right?
Fortunately the phones charge fast enough.
Right now I just wanna stop being NPO :/

Also, if you post your CT scan on your nomination, you're likely to get more attention.

Lmao!!! Sadly I'm 3k

@Pollyanna HAHAHA

Hrm. Sadly I can only do one bounty a day. It would take 16 days to push you up past 11k.
NPO for 27 hours is hardcore man.

10:39 PM
Lol. I'm fine ;) I'll get up to 10k by next year. Maybe.

But hey, sounds like they have, or soon will, root cause your bug.
Hopefully the debugging procedure is not unpleasant.

I think so. Stacktraces have been accumulated.

So where are you at, if Michigan is so far away?

The worst is getting stuck with needles twice in one day. I am not a pincushion :(
Check my profee ;)

@Pollyanna Ah HA! A race! Can Cole's doctors find his bug before I find the bug in my code?

10:40 PM
needlecushion

PLZ BE NO POKINGS. I ARE NOT PINCUSHN!

I hate watching them stick the needle. Otherwise I can watch it all day. Something about the correlating poke and sight... No.

pokes @Josh

@drachenstern la, huh? Nothing an 11 hour drive couldn't fix...

@Zypher OW

10:42 PM
Yeah, but Im not driving 11 hours to go get her ;)
Well get a flight if it's bad news

I don't mind getting poked anymore. I actually am more bothered by having my kids poked than I am by being poked.

How many times have you been stuck??

@Pollyanna I can imagine this. I don't have kids but if I did I think I would want to strange anyone who hurt them, even if it were a doctor :-)

Well, I'm in southeast michigan, so if your wife needs anything from complete strangers, let me know.

Or if there's anything I can do from NC @drachenstern just say the word

10:45 PM
Haha wild. No she's with her mom. Her mom is a RN who works contracts. Next month shell Probably be in KY or something ;) but thanks a load for the offer.
And you too @josh

@drachenstern Not often enough to think about, though I have visited the hospital my fair share of times.

Yeah I think I'm still under a dozen

When I was a new parent, I actually posted online about being present when my first kid was a baby getting his first set of shots... everything2.com/user/stienman/writeups/…
2

Oooh, my tech is walking around O.o
(pulls a Moshe) someone star that?
2
Brb

lol @ star

10:49 PM
Wait, why am I reading this???
2
> They close their little eyes really tight, their mouth is wide open, body so tense it almost shivers, arms and legs outstretched, fingers and toes clenched, little tears starting streams down their cheeks... and they are like that for what seem like an eternity, until they (finally!) get a big breath and start wailing!
This is making me very sad!

Gripping, isn't it? ;-D

shakes fist at @Pollyanna

Yeah, you know I hadn't thought about it. Reading it doesn't bother me at all, but I've now got 5 kids and they just bounce off things.

LOL
That's a handful!

@Pollyanna Hoho, an E2 user - that explains a lot...

10:52 PM
They keep my busy. They're all boys though, so rough and tumble is the order of the day.
@Shog9 Yeah.
I turned in my e2 card for a slashdot card.
When I tried to break that addiction I think I was on to web comic forums.
Then stackoverflow opened and I got addicted there.

Don't get me wrong - I love[d] E2, but it did tend to encourage that "rambling on 'till keyboard fell apart" writing style

Bah, I was on /. When Taco was all "enlightenment"

stackoverflow took away all my slashdot time :-)

Still active most weeks, enough to keep my karma pegged sky high

I'm not active and I think I still have Excellent karma...

10:54 PM
Reminds me, I haven't seen XKCD today ...

@Josh I think karma only goes down if you post badly. It doesn't drift down over time.
Today's xkcd is reasonably funny.

@Pollyanna that's what I thought too

@drachenstern Alright, what's your slashdot ID? If yours is lower I'll concede.

I've never heard of E2; anyone have a good summary (or barely solicited opinion), or should I just go look at it and figure it out that way?

@PopularDemand It's like SO, but without questions.

10:58 PM
@Shog9 Just answers and comments?

@PopularDemand It... is hard to define for me. I never really fit in. At first I figured it was just a user editable encyclopedia, what wikipedia eventually became. But the users and moderators focused so much on writing for writing's sake, that it turned into more of an unorganized blog or writer's notebook.

(really, that doesn't even come close to doing it justice... But it's kinda like trying to explain The Beatles to a pop-music fan who has somehow never heard of them)

160456

@Shog9 The who?

ah HA!

10:59 PM
@PopularDemand No, the Beatles. Try to stay with us here.

51024.

Like a mix between Wikipedia and Encyclopedia Dramatica. Then, at some point, they got Copyright Religion and the whole thing pretty much went to hell - original thought isn't all its cracked up to be.

Icq used to be 14155409 iirc

@MichaelMyers I'm glad that setup wasn't wasted.
Anyways, sounds interesting enough to put it on the "things to check out when I get home" list.

The brilliant part, way back when, was the little link cloud at the end. It was generated (in part) by in-site referrals

11:01 PM
@PopularDemand I want to watch the late movie tonight, but Doctor Who's on first.

so you ended up with these complicated paths through various barely-related topics

So Adam were off from the same register date by like three weeks huh? I admit I'm one of those who lurked a bit before registering back then

@PopularDemand it's worth a quick perusing. They had a lot of good ideas, poorly executed.

@Shog9 that link cloud was really annoying when trying to read @Pollyanna's writing

Yeah. I eventually registered because posting anonymously got to be annoying for some reason or another.

11:02 PM
Gah where's my doc? :/ ready for food :(

/me can't rememer my ICQ...

@drachenstern I'm eating pepperoni pizza in your honor. </evil>

I remember that! Oy im getting old :/
Lol

@drachenstern But not eating is such a money saver!

Woohoo 42%
Until they have to keep me here @popular
Was thinking pizza sounded good tonight. Might do that

11:04 PM
@drachenstern don't!

@Josh When it worked, it ended up being this bizarre combination of an encyclopedia and StumbleUpon

Do soup, or something easy on your stomach for your first meal!!!

Don't what?

@drachenstern don't eat Pizza as your first meal!

Yeah probably be better, soup

11:04 PM
GRUEL. and bacon.

Well type faster next time :p

@drachenstern BACON GREASE!

puke

BACON ... I needs it

Slick those intestines right up!

11:05 PM
y'know what's really good with bacon grease?

Poutine?

EVERYTHING.

BLT?

11:06 PM
@PopularDemand I've made that. It's really good on BLTs
speaking of which, I think i'll have BLTs tonight
(just ate lunch though... must hold out for true hunger...)

I hear them taking about me
@Shog but it's BACON

@Josh I will not be outdone on this front

@PopularDemand Eh, why buy it? It's too easy to make - and you can be sure it's fresh.

@PopularDemand LOL! Your image beat mine.

@Shog9 I wouldn't, but it was a suitable image for this discussion.

11:08 PM
take that @PopularDemand

@PopularDemand fair enough. There's just something so rewarding about frying bacon and then eating it... With all the grease you just rendered off.

That reminds me to try to make apple ketchup, though.

@PopularDemand what an interesting idea

@PopularDemand how do you make such a concoction?
Wait, I just realized this is being very man to @drachenstern

I don't have a recipe, but here's the first Google result: recipes.wikia.com/wiki/Apple_Ketchup

11:11 PM
Tell me another time @PopularDemand :-)
@PopularDemand cool thanks

For some reason, cooking is the one thing that I keep wanting to try in spite of an obvious and severe lack of talent.

Every time I read "smoke flavor" I think of a video of someone adding "smoke flavoring" to a vat of some food or another.

@PopularDemand sounds like you could fake it by mixing onions, mustard, and vinegar with apple butter...
I must try this!

Just bought Cooking for Geeks; hopefully that'll help.

@Pollyanna I avoid "smoke flavor" whenever possible

11:13 PM
@PopularDemand Cooking is fun! I know a lot of programmers enjoy it - following lists of deterministic instructions, and finding out the kitchen is not deterministic seems to scratch some sort of itch for me.

@Pollyanna I'm sure that happens constantly.
Liquid smoke is awesome stuff.

@PopularDemand I'm trying to learn from my roommate who's an excellent cook
So far the process has been... slow...

@Pollyanna following instructions is boring. Both in programming and in cooking. Who needs consistent results, when there's such an endless variety of interesting mistakes to be made!

@Shog9 hm, maybe that's why my code doesn't work, maybe my CPU thinks that following my instructions is too boring...

I get to be admitted. yay! :(

11:15 PM
Aw, crap :-(

Going to a hospital in Shreveport tho, not the one where I am now

Sorry Cole!

So I'll try and get on once I get situated
Y'all didn't do it, was just nature

@drachenstern They're transferring you to another facility? Interesting! Either this one is too full, or they want to get you to a specialist...

call ahead and tell 'em you want bacon.

11:17 PM
@drachenstern Get better, and really, if there's anything I can do let me know.

@drachenstern Just think of it as being wanted somewhere! Accepted into the group!

I think they're only going to feed him jello, and even I wouldn't eat bacon flavored jello.
That's about the most wrongity wrong thing I've heard of all day.

@drachenstern Probably 15 people I went to high school with and 30 I went to college with went on to med school; surely at least one of them will respond to me if I pass along a question. (This is, sadly, about the closest I can come to helping.)

No, my doc is 30 mins from my house over the interstate. I'm in Minden La
Want to be closer to my house :/

Oh, that makes sense.

11:18 PM
@Pollyanna Again. You wouldn't eat bacon jello again.

Thanks you guys, really ;)

yesterday, by Josh
It's not much but sometimes it helps to know total strangers on the internet are cheering for you

@Josh You know, you're right. I would try it once.

Ok, time to go coordinate with some other people on plans, if I can get a signal

But in seriousness, get well soon @drachenstern!

11:19 PM
main screen turn on!
Hello, GI tract, how are you?
All your ulcers are belong to us!

ROFLMAO
Oh, wow, I think I just fixed that nasty bug!

@Pollyanna It's called "sausage", Polly

MMMMMmmmm, sausage...

sausage, pudding, Jello... They're all pretty much the same thing.

Time to go. Have an evening!

11:21 PM
@Pollyanna I was referring to the bacon grease incident when I implied you had eaten bacon jell-o before :-)
@Pollyanna Take care Adam

I will. I get to go to a cub scout pack meeting and play chess with my kids.

@TylerChacha are you feeling ok? No enthusiastic HELLO for us tonight?
Ok, that's twice now I recreated the bug and twice now my new-new code recovered. I think this means I am almost ready to quit for the night, yey!
Ok, third time's the charm! I consider this bug fixed, back to my boss for review \o/

@Josh Nice work!

Thanks @Fosco. It's been driving me crazy all afternoon
It was a really intermittent one, the worst kind

11:42 PM
Bah, I don't get OpenTTD
I set up a profitable airline company with feeder railway services
and end up with profitable railway services while airlines are completely unable to make a buck

@badp I keep meaning to check out that game

...without me changing anything at all
...oh my.

@badp you should ask @YiJiang
Or, on Gaming :-)

@Josh I don't doubt that you mean well, but although chat is technically public, drachenstern might not want that info put before all of MSO.

Ok, good point
I voted to delete

11:48 PM
@Josh Well, you deleted. The question hadn't attracted answers or votes yet.

I didn't really think that through very well

too much rain over paradise

Thanks for keeping me sane @PopularDemand :-)

just... how did that train end up there?
it's just not connected with its destination

11:53 PM
GHOST TRAIN!!!!

@Josh Yeah, I like to switch it up sometimes and do the opposite of the usual. Don't expect this to become a permanent thing!

Duly noted :-)

@Shog9 that's rational at least

But he does deserve some unicorns.

Holy Cr@p!:

A: Make an application that adds two inputted numbers together

Joey AdamsHere's a short and elegant shell solution: #!/bin/sh { seq 1 "$1"; seq 1 "$2"; } | wc -l It's great for when you want to add a couple natural numbers that aren't too big. Here is a generalized version that sums all the arguments: #!/bin/sh for i in "$@" ; do seq 1 "$i" done | wc -l

11:56 PM
@Pollyanna Maybe a chat room :-)
IDK, I'm embarrassed about my lack of judgement and foresight demonstrated by my prior attempt; I'll let someone with better social skills handle this one :-D

@Josh Just ask a moderator to pin it.
