12:00 AM
@Michael, yes I see that, I just thought it was something you could download.

@MarkC uh, not the same.

PLEASE DO DEFINE Object same
@Michael, what does FUSE stand for?
@rchern What do you mean by "not the same"? I'm not sure what context you mean that in.

never mind.

12:18 AM
Well...ok (I think you mean it's not the same as when they said it)

@PopularDemand, check out stackexchange.com

@rchern Do you need a pull request, or can you just do it on your own?

12:51 AM
@rchern I take full credit for that. Unless you don't like it.

Filesystem in Userspace (FUSE) is a loadable kernel module for Unix-like computer operating systems that lets non-privileged users create their own file systems without editing kernel code. This is achieved by running file system code in user space while the FUSE module provides only a "bridge" to the actual kernel interfaces. Released under the terms of the GNU General Public License and the GNU Lesser General Public License, FUSE is free software. The FUSE system was originally part of [http://sourceforge.net/projects/avf A Virtual Filesystem] (AVFS), but has since split off into its ow...

@MichaelMrozek that is some excellent work. Bravo, sir.

@Michael, ah, I thought it was an acronym that Popular or someone thought up.

@TimStone, not necessary, but nice to have? I'm meh about it I guess
@PopularDemand, seems good (:

@rchern Thank you, thank you. It was nothing, really.

12:58 AM
hehehe

1:11 AM
@Michael, when you're done, are you going to add it to the Wikipedia list?

@MarkC No :)

1:29 AM
Anyone follow American TV shows?

No, I follow Zanzibarean ones
No, not really, since I don't have a TV
ANd generally I find there are more worthwhile things to do (or play video games)

@MarkC I'm going to assume from now on that you speak Swahili.

Hujambo, Popoolawee

2:02 AM
@PopularDemand Such as?
@rchern I did this earlier, by the way, but I was in the middle of playing Sim City and forgot to mention it. :P

@TimStone Hehe... SC4?

Yeah :D

Also, whatcha talking 'bout here this morning?
@TimStone What size have you gotten to?

I've somehow managed to bug the game though.
My city is fairly small right now, I'd have to double-check the population.

@TimStone I've built cities big enough that my computer can't even handle it

2:05 AM
@TimStone, I saw. I'm writing my question for SO right now. Want to make sure I get this done right finally.

I've owned the game for several years, but I just got motivated to install and play it again the other day after seeing something on Gaming.
@YiJiang Ah, nice. I'm learning to be patient, I had the problem before of trying to build to fast and running myself into the ground.

@rchern What are you guys talking about here?

@rchern Ah, alright :)

Being a 6 year old game SC4's performance on my 3 year old computer is surprisingly anaemic

It seems to be running pretty well for me, but this computer has a lot in it too, so...I guess I'll see what happens when the city actually gets sizable.

2:09 AM
@TimStone I just find it funny that CBS is now airing a show with a title that can't be pronounced on network TV.
Wow, I haven't played a Sim City since Sim City 2000. Good game, that, but I was always terrible at it. Could only succeed with cheats.

@PopularDemand Oh, the one with William Shatner?

@TimStone Yeah.
A friend of mine pointed out that instead of $!& My Dad Says_, it should've been titled Shat, My Dad, Says.
Special characters confuse Markdown, huh?

Hah
Hm, I should really try to answer this stupid PHP question so I can close these twenty-some tabs..
Ah, good stuff..
In the compiler code
lcname[sizeof(lcname)-1] = '\0'; /* zend_str_tolower_copy won't necessarily set the zero byte */
"won't necessarily"...as in, it may, but maybe not?

2:49 AM
I feel like this proposed-faq needs a better title. Anyone?
19
Q: What is each badge?

Popular DemandWhat is each badge with a detailed description? What are the various "badge groups"? Return to FAQ index

@YiJiang Bah. What was wrong with my original title?

@PopularDemand It's not very.. descriptive, and sounds a bit awkward

@YiJiang Okay. But I still think "What is each badge" is worse.

3:15 AM
Hmm.. "Which badges are available, and what does each mean?"
I'm not a big fan of "What is each badge?" either, meh...I can't really think of a replacement I like either, though.

Out of curiosity, do most people have one tab open for each room they're in, or just have one tab and use the side-panel to switch between them

I have one tab per room.

@MichaelMrozek Side panel. Activity in other rooms I care about is so rare that keeping a tab open would be a waste.

@MichaelMrozek One tab per room, though I do have them pinned to save space

4:00 AM
I use a single tab per chat server and use /switch (:

shakes head at Visual Studio

@YiJiang, -1, edit message does not contain a (:

@rchern (:)

that's no smiley ):

@rchern Or would you want to make me pull out that rsmiles script again? :P

4:15 AM
):

How do I make Visual Studio behave? :P

smack it

@TimStone Talk to it sternly about it's behavior

Ah, so that's what I was doing wrong. ;)
Hm, apparently that didn't work.
Is Visual Studio really incapable of...not destroying the folder structure when I import source files?

4:37 AM
There's not much I wouldn't believe VS incapable of

Heh :P

My project at work builds in GCC and VS, and I work in Linux so I don't generally bother to test VS before I commit, and I get angry e-mails from the build server because of some ridiculous VS warning like "Warning! Constant condition: while(true) "
So my commits are filled with bitter messages like "THANKS VS -- YOU'VE REALLY GOT MY BACK"

Hahah
Yeah, right now it was telling me it couldn't find a header file..
Even though it could find all of the other header files, specified in exactly the same way, in the exact same place..

@TimStone Gah, what're you doing on my work computer?

@PopularDemand I needed a change of pace.

4:46 AM
@TimStone I'd tell you not to screw anything up in there, but I'm pretty sure that the only direction now is up.

In that case, I'm happy to help.

ugh
it bothers me how people just see beta version and completely dump on it

Q: Can vote post stackoverflow in Chrome browser

It seems I can't vote any post in Chrome browser (7.0.517.41). There is just no response when I click vote triangle. Is this a known issue or just a specific issue for my workstation?

it isn't the chrome beta version preventing this lmao

@rchern I see their point. If it happens in another browser you or somebody else should say "this happens in browser X version Y, which isn't in beta"

I guess my reaction to the PHP source code wasn't negative enough, so Visual Studio thought it would help things along by smashing everything together into an even larger mess.

...are you writing PHP in VS?

4:49 AM
@rchern The policy is that it's not supported. Why should non-admins waste time on it, as long as the policy doesn't change?

@rchern It's always slightly fun to see someone on the team jump the gun and blame the beta'ness of the browser

@PopularDemand, SO works fine in Chrome beta and dev.

@MichaelMrozek No, trying to answer a question about why PHP does something as a language and I wanted pretty colours and the navigation for the compiler/engine source.

the fault is not because it is a beta browser

"Why does Stack Overflow thinks I'm someone else?"
"Because you're using a beta browser"

4:55 AM
No support for beta ISPs!
@YiJiang Someone was you the other day, by the way..not sure if you saw. :P

@TimStone No support for Singapore, you mean. We've been over this.

Right, right, my bad.

i get not supporting a beta browser. but not everything is related to that.
especially when you've got plenty of people using it that work just fine

@TimStone I saw. In fact, I quoted that conversation in my own answer to that question

shrugs

4:56 AM
Ah ha

The blockquote bug being blamed on a Chrome bug is still my favorite
I wonder if that's still open

I didn't really understand what that bug was about, what happens incorrectly?

waffles tracked it down.

Ah yeah, I remember now.

Wuts happening people

5:10 AM
Just code-browsing at the moment, heh.

The last week of little sleep caused a crash on my side. Awake now tho

6:05 AM
Hm

6:38 AM
@rchern - you about?

aye

What's your connection to other SE sites? Was going to start a proposal and had a few questions

other as opposed to?

hmm not other then :S any
got the impression your web apps involvement was considerable

um, I'm a pro tem mod on WA, participated to varying degrees on several others

6:42 AM
Well ... main question is this: How much freedom is afforded for association with other websites? @MarcGravell may have some input here too. The dilemma I have is that Q&A is a component of a site I am working on .... but obviously no point reinventing the wheel, so it would be good to use SE for this component.
Ie as a http://questions.foo.com
But as it forms a subset of the functions of a commercial entity, it could be viewed that 'outsourcing' is a potential liability/exposure depending on how much 'control' eww you have

not sure that would work. i mean, you'd still have to go through the a51 process. there's several questions on meta regarding this.

Sure, and the A51 is a good thing. The Q&A component is a very small part on the site, but I would only use SE if it added value
as opposed to writing an inferior version
as a small part of the site

@AidenBell, checkout answers.onstartups.com

@Benjol - I'm an onstartups member

@AidenBell, ok, well doesn't that partly answer your question? Or maybe they just got grandfathered in via SE1.0

6:49 AM
@Benjol But that was an SE1 site I think, so that always had that domain ... im talking foo.stackexchange.com->foo.bar.com
After beta and some growth
@MarcGravell?

@AidenBell. Yeah. I guess the key word is 'synergies'. If there's something in it for StackExchange too, I suspect they'd be up for it.

@Benjol - That's the point, a 'partnership' no matter now informal isn't always a good thing when Q&A isn't a deal breaker
@Benjol, @rchern, @MarcGravell - Never mind, I just answered my own question

@AidenBell, glad to be of help :)

:) That thing of talking to the teddy outside the sysadmin's office before asking the sysadmin

I'll take that as a compliment ;)

3 hours later…
10:03 AM
Wow, all hell let loose in SO chat, what happened?
hello me, nice and quiet in here :)

@Benjol Go tyo the top of that mess
@MarcGravell Dropped a banner on SO

@YiJiang, yeh, I saw, not sure if it will make much difference though ;) it was way risky making the tavern the default room on SO

@Benjol Poor @AidenBell Wonder what he'll think now :)

@yijiang And unfortunately, not all the ESL users are as good as you :(
By a long shot

@Benjol English is not my second language!

10:07 AM
@YiJiang Oops, sorry then :( - I forgot about Singapore. And it's too late to delete it :(

3 hours later…
1:32 PM
Morning allllllllllllllllll

@Fosco Morning!
We're banging on @rchern's doors asking for her password to the shining new chat.se
We've even got some help along the way

How's it going on this beautiful friday?..
@YiJiang lol :D

@rchern Teh zobmiez dmemnad teh pazswrod!!1!

@YiJiang That's been happening a lot.
(Not replying to your immediately preceding post.)
Wait, SE chat is a for-real thing? To the blog!

@PopularDemand chat.stackexchange.com/beta-access is the url, if you want to test your luck banging on doors

1:41 PM
@YiJiang Yeah, I figured that out. (The URL, not the password.)

i tried a few passwords.. no luck..

Are you people really going to do this again?

@PopularDemand Go to the meta feedback, you can clearly see Marc giving rchern the password
And we want teh password!

@YiJiang You mean the chat feedback room transcript?

@PopularDemand Yes

1:46 PM
@YiJiang En route.
Meh, I'll take your word for it.

i think Marc was just playing with us. (the royal us)

anyways, I's off to a weekend of wrestling with my DPCed PC:
1
Q: Steps to troubleshooting a problem with high DPC

BenjolI've got a Dual core processor, and one of the two is constantly at 100%. Looking in ProcessExplorer shows me that it's Deferred Procedure Calls. Reading around the net seems to give me tons of different answers. Is it possible to set out a couple of steps to trying to narrow down what the proble...

Have a good one, and don't go breaking the chat again :)

re-format.

@Fosco You sound just like HP support

lol

1:58 PM
"You don't know what's wrong with the machine? Okay, here are the steps to reformat your machine and reinstall Windows"

@YiJiang That doesn't sound right.
"You don't know what's wrong with the machine? Okay, here's a list of authorized HP retailers where you can buy a new computer."

Q: Your favorite SO badge...

Junaid Saeedtell us what your SO favorite badge is... and if the badge has already been mentioned by someone then upvote that answer... then we will see - Which badge is most favorite of SO users

@YiJiang sometimes it's the fastest and easiest way to fix a problem.

@Fosco Meh. Best Buy stores are everywhere.
Bleh, can't get into MSO today.

WTF!

@AidenBell I knew you're going to say that

2:07 PM
Something went on in SO tavern while I was away

@AidenBell @MarcGravell piped half the SO population into the tavern with a shiny banner message
It peaked at around 250 I think

Nice
Has the banner gone now?

@AidenBell Yeah

awww, it seemed lively
lol

Then, some hamsters died and the crowd disappeared

2:09 PM
yea, that happens

in Chat feedback on Stack Overflow Chat, 1 hour ago, by Marc Gravell
We bought a new hamster. Sorry, the pet shop was a while away.

2:26 PM
ponders attempting to merge in @TimStone's pull request and potentially doing it wrong again ):

@rchern Well, the answer seems accurate
In which case we aren't really doing anything wrong I suppose

[feature-request]: If someone writes a question and attempts to apply the [negative-badge] tag, immediately clear out the question entry field and redirect the user to another page, preferably one not in the SE network.

Hey hey hey! Teh stars are back!

Yes, the bug is fixed.
And it is full of irony.
BTW, It was your fault, @YiJiang

@balpha So what is the problem?
@balpha Me? Me?

2:32 PM
/blame @YiJiang

looks around innocently

Ooh, we have a spammer.
Three posts in five minutes from one user.
All with terrible titles (haven't opened them up yet).

@PopularDemand Aren't new users rate limited to 20min/question?

there was a bug in the trunctation for the items in the starred list on the right
this bug was triggered when a certain message was starred
and here's the irony -- it was this one:
in The SO Tavern (General) on Stack Overflow Chat, 2 hours ago, by Yi Jiang
> Some people, when confronted with a problem, think "I know, I'll ask the people on http://chat.stackoverflow.com" Now they have two problems

so did @YiJiang say said message, or star said message?

2:35 PM
@YiJiang Not a new user. I shouldn't have said "spammer," I was using an alternate definition of that term, which was my fault.
It's an existing user -- whom I recognize from SO, and not for one of the good reasons, shall we say -- posting one-liners with no thought to grammar or dupe searching.
Test message; MSO is displaying "Could not access chat" for me in the sidebar.

i've seen that a few times

@balpha Just curious: Are you guys going to show us the regex in question?

f5 (:

you vant ourr sekretz, dont ya?

I feel... oddly proud, yet scared that I brought down the chat servers with a single message.

2:44 PM
@YiJiang How many times do I have to tell you? Singapore: unsupported (and may cause undesired behavior)!!!

11 messages moved to Chat feedback

Morning everyone

g'morning

@TheUnhandledException Hello. Seen any <strike>narwhals</strike> sea unicorns today?

Not yet @Popular
Haven't opened photoshop yet ;-)
And, no @rchern, no new progress on XMPP integration -- weather's been too nice! ;-)

2:53 PM
pfft i did not ask (;

@rchern not yet :-)
You're well ahead of me in the SO-chat-code-department

hehehehe
i've had help!
@YiJiang, @TimStone, and @MichaelMrozek have all added commits

I basically wrote the whole script myself, actually
rchern focuses her time on improving chat.SO directly
And @balpha just sits there and watches

o:

3:01 PM
Hm.
You know what's easier than searching for dupes with the built-in search or Google?

@PopularDemand /transcript foo ? :)

@PopularDemand Waiting for you to find them? ;-)

@TheUnhandledException Yes.
There's no incentive to search.
How can we expect people to start searching for themselves if we offer no negative reinforcement or punishment?

status-I-smell-a-badge-suggestion

I think there are meta suggestions about rewarding people who find dupes. At the very least, people shouldn't get to keep rep for dupe posts
Last time we talked about this @Shog9 posted a question about the difference between * and -> in C and got two upvotes before it was closed

3:07 PM
@MichaelMrozek Rewarding people who find dupes won't stop other people from not checking for dupes in the first place.
I agree with the rep thing, I made that feature request a while ago (though it turned out Ether beat me to it by suggesting it in an even earlier answer) but it never got traction.

I found it. If it makes you feel better, I upvoted it two months ago

@MichaelMrozek Well, it beats you not upvoting it.

@MichaelMrozek Share a link, I will upvote also

The generally cited rule is that you can't delete a question if it has an upvoted answer. Is that strictly true, or does it merely require no answers with positive score at the time of the deletion attempt?

@TheUnhandledException See the word "it" in my last post :)

3:14 PM
Man, hard to see on this laptop screen! Thanks

@TheUnhandledException I didn't notice it either.

3:37 PM
Wow, starring the tenth entry in the starred list (went from one star to two) shoots it up to the number three slot.

@PopularDemand It's the "hotness" algorithm, remember?

@YiJiang I didn't realize that one star would have such a huge effect.
(I've heard that the algorithm is actually published somewhere but I never looked at it myself.)

Urg... typosquatters: gaming.sackexchange.com

@YiJiang If they want to register sackexchange.com, I say let 'em go for it.

I'm actually a little concerned what might be considered on topic at the Sack Exchange gaming site..

3:44 PM
@TimStone Then you should use bookmarks, type carefully and/or set your host file to redirect.

@TimStone "What's in your sack when you died in Nethack?"

Heh :P
