That is also one of the reasons many hated the EQ school setting and where pretty worried by the "school dance party" in the first movie. Flash was probably just the last straw.

Basically the writers were probably feed some requirements from the marketing dep. Those requirement where exactly the antivalues the show was meant to go against.

@Derpy Sure, Flash Sentry as a pointless love interest is bad. Many other works have love interests thrown in for no reason, and it's often bad.

It wasn't bad just because he didn't had a backstory / development (which still would only help, and that is probably why he end up to be much more likeable in the last movie when they try to give him an actual character)

the point is that he was a love interest. And that pointed in the mainstream shows direction

I may have mentioned my favorite bad example: Jules Verne's Voyage au centre de la Terre. Most of the book is three people traveling underground, completely separated from other humans. The first quarter of the story is preparing for that journey. There's a pretty good reason why the three protagonists meet no other characters.

But the book does add a love interest girl, who appears in a speaking role for about a page, and contributes nothing but one stupid joke in the second or third chapter.

basically a "magical girl" setting with fashion and boyfriends stuffed in by force, to the point that they become the central point.

At least, MLP can try to sell plushies and dolls. Others try to sell social models and dresses/handbags

The good example is Les av. du capitaine Hatteras. It is about the journey of a ship to unknown lands, so there's no opportunity to meet anyone, especially not exotic females who could become a love interest. And captain Hatteras goes for sure: he hires a crew of 20 unmarried male sailors. Unmarried is specifically a job requirement he states.

@Derpy Flash Sentry at least has a minor payoff in the second movie, when Sunset admits "Flash is a great guy and all, but I never really liked-him liked him. I was just using him to become more popular." He's useful to tell something about Sunset's character. That's still not enough reason to make Twilight fancy him.

@Derpy What? Other animated shows aren't trying to sell toys or other extra stuff?

@b_jonas I meant: MLP has a "you will be happier with friendship" message, and obviously it also promotes toys since they need money to live.

@Derpy Sure. Many shows have both messages they promote and toys, just sometimes it's bad messages.

many other shows, especially live action shows aimed at teenager girls do not usually promote friendship. They promote a "stand out", "leader" role.

may work for too-much people , who will assimilate those messages without asking why. But I'm not on that boat.
